Proposed 10% Pay Cut for Teachers (Rumor)

Postby neilsingh100 » August 18th, 2020, 9:09 pm

Rumor is the government in talks with TTUTA for a 10% pay cut. Not sure if they targeting teachers since schools will most likely remain closed for rest of the year or if they just starting with them. Either way hard times ahead since the last time government had to cut teacher's pay was in the 80s when the country was under an IMF programme.

PM & Ministers will need to lead by example and take a pay cut first but the 2020/2021 budget will have close to a 20 billion dollar deficit if they were to leave things as is.

There are teachers who worked really hard with their classes everyday online, who used their own resources at their own expense to ensure their students completed the syllabus and were able to advance to the next class year come September and who will continue to do so this upcoming term.
But there are also teachers who haven't done anything but collect pay since March 15th when schools were closed.

Pretty much like all government employees, some go above and beyond while many barely do an hour of work a day.

Those are the ones whose pay they should cut.

Teachers should be paid by the number of passes their students achieve.

Let's be real though how can teachers as the example expect to get their entire salary when no physical schooling taking place. You don't need the entire teaching population for a subject to produce the online teaching material so majority of them being paid at the moment to do nothing. Let me know if my assessment is wrong

Truth.......My sister is a Head of Department in a high school in NW Trinidad and hasn't done jack chit since schools closed. Mussbe went out 2-3 days in June when they were asked to come out to end the term administratively.

My neighbour is a primary school teacher in a SDMS school and he prepares and does work everyday remotely. '
I'm sure the primary school teacher is not even 1/2 as well paid as a High School HoD.

Not a teacher, but heard that rumor from a union rep at work.

But they were saying frig that, send home the contract staff til things return to normal. I not on contract and both options don't sound good, which is why I am one of the fools who was adhering to the pandemic plan, hoping September would have been the rollback period. So much for hope

Teachers should be paid by the number of passes their students achieve.

It has to be on expected performance though.

You can put a teacher in Naps, Pres, Convent, SAGHS etc and every student will achieve a pass. Take the same teacher and put in Malick, Book, Success Laventille etc and you will go home with $0.

Then those PNM schools need to be addresed.

Rowlee stood in parliament and went on a rant about his people been left behind.

Seems nothing has be done to addresed his people's learning difficulties.

Who is the ‘they’? Teachers one race or something ?

when i said "they" i was specifying no one in particular. i was using the same phrase the minister of finance said when he said he 'raised the price of gas and they have not rioted yet'

everything gone virtual in the govt service. most contract staff in the govt is IT related so sending home contract staff will bring the virtual system to the ground. from birth certificate to court appearance is virtual.
