The presence of police officers at Diego Martin North Secondary School failed to protect teachers from a group of violent pupils yesterday.

The pupils unleashed a series of attacks on the teachers during school hours, causing them to retreat to the staffroom.

The Express was told that a Chevrolet Silverado pick-up, belonging to a male teacher, was trampled upon by pupils. The vehicle was damaged.

“The pupils jumped on the hood and bonnet, causing a lot of dents on the van. A box lunch was thrown at that same teacher today, then the pupils threw a live iguana in a classroom while a female teacher was teaching and locked her inside the classroom. Another teacher had water thrown on him while another was pushed by a student and threatened with a stone. All of this in the presence of police and Ministry (of Education) officials,” a teacher said.

At noon, the teachers took a decision to remain in the staff room until the Education Ministry responded.

The Express was told that teachers returned to school yesterday after the ministry advised that the at-risk pupils would be enrolled in a programme.

The plain clothes police officers stationed at the school called for back-up to quell the out-of-control pupils, the Express was told.

Last term, teachers walked off the job because of violence and threats being made by pupils.

The police were also called in following a confrontation between pupils and security officers.

An investigation was also launched into reports that some of the violent pupils were members of gangs.

Teachers claimed that the gang and criminal activities had been plaguing the school for a long time.

The teachers said they did not feel safe at their workplace.

Parents have also expressed concern for their children’s safety and pleaded with the Ministry to intervene.

A teacher said: “The ministry promised that these at-risk pupils will be removed from the system and placed in another programme but this did not happen. The school provided the ministry with all the information they needed and still nothing was done.”

Ministry officials said school supervisors had visited the school and discussions are ongoing.

Mom vs schoolgirl: Beating on the road



“Our parents must be exemplars of right and responsible behaviour” says Minister of Education Anthony Garcia.

This in response to a video depicting a parent and child beating a pupil on the road.

In a statement on Saturday, Garcia expressed his complete disapproval and questioned how children were supposed to behave if these are the types of examples being put before them.

“A parent being involved in the physical assault of a child is unacceptable. We rely heavily on parents to be the first teachers of discipline, respect and morality and, to have any parent act in this way, diminishes the work that we as teachers are attempting to do and sends the wrong message to students.”

The Ministry of Education's School Supervision and Management Division has been in contact with the school and, on Monday, the School’s Supervisor will be on site to aide the principal in resolving this matter. As the Ministry continues to work toward reducing student indiscipline, recognition must given to the teachers who have been working with Management to ensure that all schools are well managed and governed.

According to Garcia, this latest incident of student indiscipline in the streets reiterates the sentiments shared earlier this week of the need for increased partnership between the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the Ministry of Education.

Why Garcia does not issue statements when bullies beating up people children? I wont justify what the parent did, but usually it reaches to this when they can't take it anymore and complaints fall on deaf ears. Most times the school covers it up and the bullies are still in school doing the same thing over and over.

Could very well Be a case where the parents child was being bullied repeatedly and their attempts at reporting it to the school have fallen on deaf ears and left the parent with the only option left, which would have been to confront the bully themselves and just maybe the bully attempted to beat the parent and the lady was merely defending herself.
Not so far fetched considering school,children destroying teachers cars and behaving like wild animals in the jungle, just look at that lil Chile in the hijab, you see her disrespectful and ignorant behavior? That child belongs in St Ann’s for real....
