^ in ground.

I don't like to see pipe and conduit showing. I'd only run something surface if it's part of the style e.g. industrial design.

I ran 1" PVC to each zone and then reduced to 3/4" and used Rainbird elbows and connected the 2" popup heads with the black tubing

once the grass grows up, the sprinkler heads are nearly invisible when they are off.

I had a pretty bad mole cricket problem on my turf grass (not sure what kind of turf grass I have). Sprinkling "talstar" granules did wonders!

For the broad leaf weeds, "actril ds" worked without killing the lawn.

^ most plant shops here will sell weed killers

the problem is that our local common lawn grass, aka savannah grass, wil also be killed by weed killers

they only work with turf grass like Bermuda and Zoysa etc

you got to weed by hand like how it was done in the old days esp for nutgrass
and use a pre emergent chemical to kill any seeds which drop in via wind etc

The weeds I have are in my turf, Zoysa...if you have a name, I appreciate it.
I visited local stores and tried some products (name slips me), but willing to try again, anything.

Thanks.

Basagran is pretty good against nut grass, will require spaced out application.

24d is also a good common weedicide for turf use

Thanks MonsterPower and pugboy.

I did try the Basagran, name sounds familiar. Broad leaves it did take care, however the narrow leaves are the problematic ones. Saying that I had no luck getting rid of the nut grass. Is spraying with the Basagran at every cut the best way to apply?

24d I have not heard of, will definitely give that a try.
Sorry for the noob question, what do you mean by "will require spaced out application"?

Thanks

Spray every couple weeks or so.

Tall grassy weeds will be choked out if turf is cut regularly and a seed killer works best against them
They are easy to pull out anyway. Nut grass is the real problem though and sometimes it is better to dig out the nuts by hand.

Don't forget to buy a sticker chemical also, it helps the spray stick and absorb better

thank god I found this thread.. I get some pcs of ZOYSA from someone.. cleared some blocks of grass I had in the back and planted the pcs of ZOYSA bout two feet apart. Its been about threee weeks now.. and the grass growing some areas faster than others.. but its growing..

I have the weeds growing back but I pull them up manually probably one every weekend. this is getting to be a pain..
is there anything I could do to treat those weeds that coming up and fighting the zoysa grass.. kills the weeds without inteferring with the zoysa growth..

and two the areas I havent 'hoe' up how do i treat that grass to die off before zoysa spreads to those areas?

bear in mind I have dogs.. so the chemical cant be too harmful..
I am not putting in any sprinkler system .. as same doesnt make sense given size of yard. so a normal hose attached to a sprinkler will be what I use...
any help would be greatly appreciated..

Anyone know what type this is?

We had these home a while now...was growing good for a bit but then started to die out.
We got these from seeds but like everyone mentioned it was a painful and long process.
Right now I want to get back out lawn with turf but I don't know what type this is.
Questions are where do I get Zoysia to buy seeds or plants, what is the most I should pay for them and any more advice would we welcomed.
thanks.

That what you have there is Zoysia grass. I started my lawn with similar clumps as you have there.

Bought UREA and apply every week for 5 mths. I am getting good growth. To purchase the grass is a bit expensive but its a quick fix. Either you have the money to spend or you wait it out. May take on average a year or so to complete a 5000sq ft piece of land.

From my experience the grass is slow growth by its nature. Requires alot of wetting. This is an advantage when it populates your entire yard as you wont have to be cutting as often. This is also a disadvantage because it takes long to grown in your yard.

I am waiting it out and letting it grow on its own. I continue to collect pcs from friends and family and plant them in different spots in my yard and use urea once weekly and water. With the rainy season currently taking over now is the best time to start the lawn. Just keep weeding and allowing the grass to grow..

Okay cool yay Zoysia lol Thanks for the identification!
I don't really want to buy...was going to try and see what I can make happen with what I have already but I will consider buying a few depending on the price.

One part of our lawn was covered with it and then it slowly died except for those two clumps you see.
So I just go in an Agro shop and ask for Urea? Is it a granule/pellet etc?
How do I use it...from your experience?
thanks again

Urea will work but you run the risk of burning the grass due to it being in granular form. The better thing to use is a simple balanced soluble fertilizer such as 20-20-20. Use it weekly and make sure to maintain the moisture. If you want it to spread faster you only trim the tops of the grass clumps and it will grow outward. (I run and own an Agricentre and landscaping company) any additional advice needed you can call 652-1864

It is better to run a higher percentage nitrogen fertilizer for lawns. The numbers represent Nitrogen-Phoshorous-Potassium. Phosphorous aids in root growth and will promote weeds if used, especially in a mature lawn. Over watering and over-feeding also promote weed growth.

A good way to propagate your lawn is to split off the grass from large growth mounds and replant the plugs in the spaces between clumps.

Copied from Zoysia Maintenance Calendar:

Fertilization
Apply nutrients based on soil testing.
In absence of a soil test, apply ½ pound of nitrogen
per 1,000 square feet 3 weeks after greenup. Use a
complete nitrogen-phosphorus, potassium (N-P-K)
turf fertilizer with a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio (for
example, 12-4-8 or 16-4-8). Do not apply more than
2 pounds of nitrogen a year.

Watering
Zoysiagrass needs 1 to 1 ¼ inches of
water a week. If you don’t get enough rain, water
your lawn. A dark bluish-gray appearance,
footprinting, or wilted, folded, or curled leaves
indicate that it is time to water. Irrigate the soil to a
depth of 4 to 6 inches; this can be determined by
probing the soil with a screwdriver or similar tool.
On sandy soils, zoysiagrass may require ½ inch of
water every third day. It is often necessary to water
an area for 3 to 5 hours to apply 1 inch of water.

Get zenith zoysia seeds instead,
Broader leaf than common zoysia and you can get cheap on ebay.
From what i have seen zoysia grows better locally than bermuda imo.
