So much geo political bad takes here but Nordstream 1 running through Ukraine is one of the bigger ones

More natural gas will flow directly to Germany and potentially bypass other existing pipelines that run through other European countries. Ukraine remained the main transit corridor for Russia's gas export, 80% of Russian gas exports to the European Union were made through Ukrainian territory. Two-thirds of Gazprom's revenue comes from the sale of gas that crosses Ukraine. Nordstream 2 bypasses the Yamal pipeline and the Ukraine System which will deprive Kyiv of lucrative transit fees. Most significantly, Ukraine sees this as a major threat. Russia pays Ukraine approximately $2 billion in transit fees to send gas through its territory.

What's with all this flexing of power?

Also, Russia’s size makes it so that they can’t bring all of their forces to one target. They still have to protect the rest of their huge nation from opportunistic attacks from others.
