Anyone using an impact driver to do occasional auto-mechanic work?
Removing and installing bolts, wheel nuts etc?
Not heavy usage - maybe once a month or less

Looking at a DEWALT 20V MAX XR Impact Driver, Brushless, 1/4", 3-Speed, Bare Tool Only (DCF845B)
I already have DeWalt 20V Max batteries

https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-Impact-Br ... 0BQCWH5KF/
or
https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DCF809B-B ... 07QJ96V1S/

Any suggestions or advice?

for wheel nuts you may want a bigger sized one

I considered this as well but ended up buying a 1/2” corded impact and put a 10’ rhino cable on it. Cordless is very convenient I wouldn’t lie but I have a concern about having batteries sitting for extended periods between use.

Surprisingly, these lil hex drive impacts can take out wheel nuts, but require a lot of impacting. I have done it many times with my DCF887

I wont trust them to retighten tho

But overall, i wont trust them for bolts and nuts on a car's suspension, but good for any other fastener you will meet on a car.

I opted for a mid-sized impact wrench with ½" anvil (DCF 894)
So far it hasnt met a bolt it couldnt take off, but there are much bigger dewalt units available.
But to be fair, i never used it on any old fasteners or rusted out bolts.

for wheels I'll probably hand break and hand tighten them - just really to make the job easier/quicker.
This is very occasional use, so I really can't warrant buying a 1/2" drive hog ring or detent impact wrench.
An impact driver on the other hand can have lots more uses, around the house too.

But this is really what I wanted to know

I’m biased but my Milwaukee hex haven’t failed me in 5 years, there is hex to socket adapters, just get a good set

General use for me is 1/2” and 9/16” nut sizes breaking and tightening on those big floor machine chassis and dock levelers, restaurant equipment and the occasional brakes and wheels on the car during maintenance. It gets wheel nuts off 75% of the time and tightening normal with of course hand check after, will break shock bolts normal.

Model # 2953-20

Yeah if I went Milwaukee first for sure - but I already have other tools and batteries for DeWalt 20V Max
My Dewalt drill driver going over 10 years now - same batteries too
DeWalt DCD790

But I need impact now

I also have the DCF887, but never used it for the wheel lugs (although many of the reviews on Amazon say it works for typical tightened ones).

For that I got a DCF889B (bare tool without battery) since I'm already invested in a few different DeWalt cordless tools and have several batteries - it has not met a wheel lug it couldn't break, but it's loud as hell (literally sounds like a tyre shop  ).

I've tried using the DCF887 for other car work, and while it can easily remove the smaller to medium sized fasteners, I don't expect it to break hub or cradle arm bolts and the like. However, the big issue with it for car work is that the size/shape of it with battery makes it surprisingly cumbersome to reach many nuts/bolts, so bear in mind what fasteners you intend to use it for and the clearance needed for the tool and your hand.

But don't let that deter you - it is the bomb for around the house stuff (building furniture, exercise equipment, and other general house maintenance, etc). If you're an avid DIYer and intend to use it for such as well, it's no big loss to only be able to use it for some auto mechanic work.

I bought an AC Delco cordless ratchet wrench instead for the harder to reach places on the car.

Yeah a cordless ratchet is invaluable.

The Atomic version of the DeWalt impact driver is pretty compact tho

bought a total 1/2 gun from toolking for 888$

2 batteries, charger, gun and a 17mm 19mm and 21mm socket with a bag.
best value for money,
removed wheels torqued to 100ftp easy, super light and maneuverable vs my mid torque Milwaukee,

couldnt remove a axle nut tho, milwaukee took a couple seconds hammering as well but removed it, for wheels alone u cant go wrong.

Trying to decide on one of these washers. I’ll be using it only for a back patio. Looking for something electric.

1. Dewalt 2100psi.
https://amosestt.com/dewalt-2100-psi-12 ... asher.html

2. Simpson 2300psi.
https://amosestt.com/simpson-clean-mach ... asher.html

Thoughts??

Both will work well but they seem rather pricy for what they are, however you also have that big brand name reliability to consider. They will probably outlast several generic chinese. It's just a matter of form factor and that's up to you.

yeah Karcher is mostly hype. Got decent service from a Karcher 'follow-me' but Hadden can't seem to repair it properly
Bought a K5 and it randomly glitches

How long did you get on the original Karcher?

Recently bought a K5, and I fell for the hype.

Assembling it felt like I needed to have a mechanical engineering degree to try and understand the instructions.

it is caused by the plastic outlet manifold splitting along a seam from the plastic molding process
another part which fits into it with an oring causes expansion by the oring which makes it split
the fix is to use a slightly smaller oring
my own the motor burned but i kept that part
of i find it i can give you

I think we got about 4 years on the follow-me
K5 had to have one of the nozzles replaced from new
Sometimes you will pull the trigger, hear the pump whirring and no pressure....guessing some valve or the other sticking.

the valves are tiny and made of plastic and
on my k5 it was only developing about 70% pressure but i used it like that for a long time
i got the valves by hadden and replaced them myself, fairly easy job.

however i let a workman use it the other day and he must be run it for 6hrs straight and went i went to use it weekend it was hardly developing pressure and then the motor burned since the k5 is water cooled

Yeah I was looking for something just above 2000psi. I also got warned about Karcher and really don't want to have it gone through in 3-4 years. So these 2 sort of caught my eye (yes the brands too).

I have a k5 water cooled for approx 10 yrs and
Had to change the pump 5-6yrs ago as well as the wand with the turbo nozzle

I bought the adapter from AliExpress and i use the metal wand with the different tips
There is some pressure loss but doesnt affect what i use it to do

Bought this brass adapter for my K'archer and it works great
it lets me use standard pressure washer nozzles, wands and accessories with my K'archer
