WTK: Transmission Problem...Advice needed!!!

Postby atomik » December 18th, 2011, 7:18 pm

Tuners, my vehicle is a Toyota altis automatic transmission. Bought the car RORO about 4 years ago, immaculate condition. Up to recent times about roughly 5months ago the engine light came on, however when i reset the battery it went off, so i carried it to my mechanic nevertheless for a check up, i did an oil change and oil filter change while at it, however he mentioned that my transmission seal needed changing, only this month did i realize transmission fluid was leaking so i carried it for the seal to be changed, mind you the transmission never gave any problems before all the gears were in smooth transition. After changing the seal new transmission fluids were replaced as well.

On the return of my car while driving i noticed while cruising on gear two if the car met a small incline or something of that sort the gear would drop to one only until i mash harder the gear will start transitioning normal again i went back to the mechanic and told him he test drove the car heard and felt the gear dropping and said it was because the ect power switch was on.....( the ect power switch is normally next to the fog light switch by the gear shifter of the altis it is used to boost ur acceleration a little) but i told him that is nonsense since i used that switch for 4yrs and the gear never dropped. He said the car was working normal so i just left. Day after engine light pops up again, so i had the mechanic's engine diagnostic person attach some sort of tester with a touch screen to the brain box and he said the problem was with some cylinder between gear 1 and 2.

After that i was told to have a transmission specialist check it out however the guy said most times if the specialist fixes that sort of problem it arises in the future again, he said another possible cause was if an air bubble was caught in the cylinder or something like that. He said run the transmission till it goes and replace it with another.

I dont know if anyone has had this problem before or anyone who knows about transmission problems who can render some advice also any information on transmission specialists in Trinidad would be of great assistance. Thanks much

Looks like you open a can of worms there pally......First thing you need to do is get another opinion from a mechanic who is not your present mechanic padner......

You need to check your oil level, this can cause the tranny not to work properly.
A diagnostic for more in depth trouble shooting.
Last is to make sure and go by a "specialist" in tranny and not your side of the road guys who does beat out ball joints with a SS jumbo.....if you know what i mean.

If you plan on keeping this car take your time and fix the problem.

thanks homeboy^^....however the oil level is normal, when the seal was changed oil was as well, also changed it with the required oil totota ATF type T-IV, so i believe that isnt the problem.

Can you recommend any specialists who are well recognized and have an excellent track record?

also any views from tuners who may have had the same problem as described would be of great assistance!

shift solenoid a not cylinder...... is what i said, for that tranny for ist gear solenoid a and b are on, for second a alone is on for third both are off and for 4th b alone is on.... the short was coming from shift solenoid a which will cause rough or erractic shifting between 1st and second gear . the reason i said to go by a specialist and tell them what i said is because many times people have gone and rebuilt their transmissions and spent a lot of money and still end up with the same problems.... now the problem is to get that solenoid is real stress as u will have to get a scrapped tranny or hit the firm ......cost plus cost of labour will work out to be very close ...hence the reason we told u to go by a specialist who may end up having a scrapped one or may have access to the solenoid...people have to understand that electronic items choose some real sheit up times to kick out and are very unpredictable things like solenoids can start to short because of many reasons... and with vehicles dey does do all kinda madness when dey ready. so as i said again go to a specialist who does work on electronic transmissions...
