What does P0730 Gear Ratio Control Malfunction mean?

What does P0730 Gear Ratio Control Malfunction mean?

A mechanic told me that it means i need to change the solenoid in my transmission.

Is this true? If not what do I need to do?

The vehicle is a Mazda 232 BJ Model.

You need to factor in what symptoms exist, and what codes are coming up.
Then you can have an idea of what is really going on.
You just cant beat a brand new foreign used unit.

Well the two codes that came up are P0730 Gear Ratio Control Malfunction and P0327 Knock Sensor Malfuntion.

The symptoms i'm getting are slow acceleration (the engine revs, but the car doesn't move, although it is in drive), longer time for gears to change and sometimes the third gear doesn't go in.

Change your knock sensor.

Do a proper test drive. What gears are actually working? 1, 2, 3, 4?
What gear are you pulling off on?
Looks like your mechanic may be correct.

Yeah i'll change the knock sensor.

In the test drive, its pulling off on 1st and driving on 2nd. It takes tremendously long to get to third (if at all) and never gets to 4th.

If he's correct, he mentioned that the solenoids cost somewhere around $1,600 . Thats pretty expensive, don't you think?

I was doing some other reading and it was being suggested that perhaps some sensors on to measure the gears are bad?

Start off by changing the knock sensor on your '323'!

Just an update here..i got it fixed, but it wasnt the solenoids, but rather some belts in the transmission..got those changed an the car is working fine now!
