Most OBD2 ports are 12" away from center console either on passenger side or driver side.( know of an instance where saw 1 located in the engine bay) I was reading somewhere the Protocol determines where its placed however i know by the pin layout you can determine the protocol being used.
i think the shape of the port is also a quick reference to whether its OBD1 or OBD2.

lancer ck4 obd2 driver side about 12" from center console

how's that new scanner working hoping to come by you to get a little read out

don't even think it qualifies as OBD, mazda proprietary port, like the nissan consult.

quintessentiallyenigmatic, haha i guest you didn't take my advice. all those people what is for you to buy there tool then after is to ass with you once they get there money. they claim that it will work on all Asian models with the ODB 2 type port. as far as i know Nissan and Mitsubishi have some kinda crazy protocol that the tool doesn't recognize. when choosing a tool you can't get a good tool by spending $2000 all your doing is buying a toy
