Female attorney murdered in south
One month after an attorney ended an abusive relationship with a businessman, he ambushed her in her home, slit her throat, and then ingested a poisonous substance. The murder/suicide of Margaret Parsad, 52, and Satnarine Maharaj, sent shock waves through the legal, business and political fraternities in South Trinidad yesterday. Police said Maharaj broke into Parsad’s home at Gordon Street, San Fernando, yesterday morning and waited for her to return from jogging. Police said Parsad was involved in a stormy relationship with Maharaj, of Mt Moriah Road, San Fernando, for over six years. Police said last month she ended the relationship and even took out a restraining order against him.
Police said Maharaj called her last Wednesday, begging for another chance, but she rejected him. Parsad, a mother of two, was the ex-wife of prominent attorney Shastri Parsad, brother-in-law of Tabaquite MP, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj. Parsad was also the daughter of San Fernando attorney, Mewahlal Chatoor. She dealt with mainly matrimonial and civil cases. Maharaj, an import and export businessman, divorced his former wife 15 years ago.
In the 2007 general elections, a source said he was actively involved in the Congress of the People (COP) campaign in the Pointe-a-Pierre constituency. Police believe Maharaj went to Parsad’s home with the intention of killing her. Neighbours told police she was seen jogging around 6.30 am.
Parsad’s law chambers were located at the front of her home. So around 7.30 am, Parsad’s clerk, Dwayne Douglas, and another employee turned up for work, but met the doors locked. They called out to her but got no answer. They became worried and called the police. When the police got there, they broke into the house and found Parsad lying in a pool of blood in the living room area. Maharaj was found in one of the bedrooms. Police recovered a chinese chopper, which they believe was used to slit her throat. Investigators suspect Maharaj drank a mixture of paraquat and gramoxone. His L200 Mitsubishi vehicle was found two houses away, in a car park. Police cordoned off both sides of the one-way street, preventing members of the public, including the media, from getting close to the crime scene.
Parsad’s father arrived around 1 pm, minutes before the bodies were removed. After viewing his daughter’s body, a distraught Chatoor, when approached for a comment, muttered: “She is my daughter. She is my daughter.â€
