WTK: How to quiet a loud muffler

Postby nareshseep » December 10th, 2008, 9:48 am

Yeah guys, I want to quiet down a bit my muffler, someone told me to put a better silencer, but I was wondering if that will cause compression issues with the engine (too much backpressure)

vehicle mazda 323 1.5

DO you have the original Catalytic convertor?
what about any resonators in the middle of the piping?

I am trying to understand what sort of exhaust system you currently have.
Is it the OEM exhaust with simply an aftermarket barrel?

if its the stock exhaust system with just a barrel at the end...put the silencer thing back into the center of the barrel..if ur barrel doesnt hav one..u may need to change the entire barrel

well then the exhaust barrel is the culprit
If it does not have a silencer add-on, you may need to change the barrel.

I had a similar problem with my previous car.
Bought a generic stainless steel barrel. Was relatively quiet at first then got louder as time passed. Strongly suspected the cheap resonator filling was the culprit.

Anyhow, i swapped it for a good brand barrel, with better quality materials and workmanship, this one has a more consistent tone, and lasted until i sold the car.

the muffler people could install a free flow resonator for about $250 i think...it will help lower the exhaust noise if you current barrel in good condition and you don't want to pay a grand to get a new stainless barrel

the size of the resonator makes a difference 2. Adding the resonator will make a difference but VexXx Dogg is rite, u shud invest in a better quality barrel.

cheap barrels=poor materials of construction, poor quality.
I had a similar problem but the car was sold b4 i cud fix it. I have a megan racing barrel if u interested, pm me for details.

most cheap barrels will go bad quickly, the packing and the mesh around the packing does come loose, i bought a used HKS Super Drager and it is absolutely worth the 500 i paid for it, or was it 450, anyway, the sound is not loud and it take a fair amount of licks and has not yet dented, so maybe a good barrel will do it,,,,sorry this thread had to posted out of the hallowed walls of the mazda forum, i've been real busy, u could probly check dragon imports for a good used big-brand barrel.

how long exactly is this resonator? I'm looking for an 18" resonator with 2" inlet and outlet
