Police used their private cars as bait for thieves who were hooked at the end of a big police investigation into the theft of cars in and around the Gulf City Shopping Complex in La Romaine.

Two thieves who saw an unlocked car with a window down jumped in and drove away.

The car belonged to a police officer who was undercover nearby and the thieves were held within minutes.

The suspects began talking and, over the weekend, police from the South Coast to Central Trinidad began arresting people and recovering cars. By yesterday, 11 vehicles had been recovered and 11 men were in custody.

The sting was spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner of Police (South) Phillip Carmona, who said he was concerned about the spate of car thefts in the Southern Division.

A ten-man team of officers spent six weeks undercover at the shopping mall, until they made the breakthrough last Friday.

The recovered cars were stolen as far back as Boxing Day 2006 from San Fernando, Marabella and Chaguanas.

Police found several Nissan Sunnys, Nissan B12s, a Mazda 626 and a Toyota station wagon.

Some of the vehicles had false licence plates and others were being repainted and scrapped.

The suspects were held at garages and homes at Lowkie Trace, Penal; Enterprise, Chaguanas; Carlsen Field; Caparo; Caroni Savannah Road and Quinam Road, Morne Diablo.

They are expected to appear in court today.

Detectives Phillip, Levia and Maynard led the sting operation.

Great stuff !! It's about time. Good work.

Now all we need is an idea for the same police to launch a sting to arrest corrupt police officers, customs officers, soldiers, licensing officers, mall security et al.

Start with oneself.

If these arrests are made public and pushed to everyone in the media, the public will start to have confidence in the service.

But its like they too ashamed to say these things. I mean.... the criminals and other police already know about it.

Whatever happened to the 'family of the government official' that was held with drugs and charges stopped at the police station?

the work that the police did was very commendable, give credit where it is due. politics have nothing to do with this.
