Toon reject second Carroll bid
Ashley stands firm, but transfer could still go ahead
Newcastle have told Sky Sports News that a second bid for Andy Carroll has been rejected as Liverpool continue their complicated pursuit of the striker.
The 11-goal hit-man is understood to be on his way to the North West to discuss a move to Anfield and reports on Monday afternoon had suggested that a British record £35million fee had been agreed.
Liverpool had been unsuccessful in a first bid for Carroll, which was thought to be worth £30m, but it was said that the second approach had convinced Newcastle owner Mike Ashley to part with his star asset.
However, Newcastle have counteracted the speculation by stating that a second offer, believed to be from Liverpool and said to be worth a reduced £32.5m, has been turned down ahead of the transfer deadline at 11pm on Monday.
The confusing tug-of-war, which could still result in a transfer, has emerged as the box-office event of the transfer window as Liverpool presumably prepare to reinvest the funds generated from the potential £50m sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea.
Potential
Carroll is currently recovering from a thigh injury, but, despite relative inexperience at Premier League level, he is viewed as an ideal signing with regards to his age, potential and marketing value.
The 22-year-old made his England debut at the end of 2010 and Liverpool's parent company, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), appear to have decided that he will prove a sound investment in the rebuilding process of the 18-time champions of England.
Ajax striker Luis Suarez is also on his way to Anfield in a £22.8m deal, with the Uruguayan's move set to be confirmed when the formalities of paperwork and a work permit are approved.
Blackpool captain Charlie Adam has also been a target of Liverpool in the January transfer window and the five-time European Cup winners had an offer of £4m rejected earlier this month.
Ian Holloway, Blackpool's manager, is also adamant that there have been no new bids for his skipper because acting chief executive Karl Oyston is not answering his phone.
