"Almost 26,000 Volkswagen vehicles will be recalled in Australia after the German car company finally responded to growing safety concerns.

Volkswagen Australia confirmed on Tuesday night it would conduct a recall across its Golf, Jetta, Polo, Passat and Caddy models made between June 2008 and September 2011. The recall will affect 25,928 vehicles within this range.

The move will mirror other recalls in Japan, Singapore and China, where concerns have been raised about a number of issues related to Volkswagen's direct-shift gearbox (DSG). The recall will target a particular version of DSG, the seven-speed DQ200.

Volkswagen Australia said it would contact the customers involved, and inspect and replace the mechatronics unit in the DSG for no charge to the motorist.

It is not yet clear whether the recall will address all issues related to the DSG, which is the automatic transmission in late-model Volkswagens. One symptom of a faulty DSG was a sudden deceleration while driving. Some motorists have also reported shuddering in the vehicles.

The move follows a wave of anger from Volkswagen customers sparked by the death of Melissa Ryan, a 32-year-old Melbourne woman who died in 2011 on the Monash Freeway while driving a 2008 Golf. Ms Ryan's family and the truck driver who rear-ended her believe the car dramatically lost speed shortly before she was hit.

Ms Ryan was driving a petrol manual and most of the Volkswagen complaints to Fairfax Media - now more than 300 - involve automatic vehicles with the DSG transmission or a known fault with the diesel injectors.

But reports of the coroner's inquest into Ms Ryan's death acted as a trigger for Volkswagen drivers who have experienced sudden deceleration. The customers were furious Volkswagen has not issued recalls in Australia that had been established in other countries.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport, which has not answered Fairfax Media's queries since Thursday, now faces serious questions about why it did not push Volkswagen to issue a recall in line with other countries.

Some of the DSG issues were addressed in the United States as early as 2009.

The department, which recommends safety recalls to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, also did not act on the diesel injector problem, despite its British counterpart, the Vehicle and Operator Service Agency, pushing Volkswagen to contact customers and repay motorists for thousands of dollars spent repairing faulty injectors.

Volkswagen knew about the injectors as early as the British investigation in 2011, yet only recently released a ''silent'' campaign in Australia to fix the problem.

When one of the injectors fail, the whole car shuts down - often while driving - including the power steering. The so-called ''service campaign'' fixed the problem only when a customer took their car in for service - and paid for the fix."

Well I've had my mechatronic changed out @ 1 week old. Had the problem of the sudden deceleration and I think it stayed in 2nd gear. Luckily the sales guy was riding with me, and he calmly said it was the mechatronic that needed changing. My gripe now is a little vibration or shuddering I think from 1st gear to 2nd gear. It really is annoying, hope nothing else is wrong.

Hey Sanjay...try running the car hard for two weeks and see if this helps...what happens is due to a lot of casual driving or stop and go due to traffic the dsg clutches become glazed hence the shuddering.....once ya run it hard as these cars were made to be driven as such your issue should resolve...

Let us know if this helps

Ahhh... This makes me feel good. I did run my Yeti relatively hard in the early stages. Not constantly flooring, however stepping on the accelerator at times. Well no issues really.

Hopefully, your DSG can work it out.

Just remember,a tech by best told me to accelerate harder to prevent the over riding or else I could damage the clutch...

Unless you driving on the highway or end up first in line at a traffic light every single time.... this is not always feasible.

After about 19k miles I find the dsg runs better than ever before. Not sure why but I had a lot of shuddering as per most here accelerating from D2 but I these days I find the shifting is a lot smoother.

Read somewhere that the clutches need to be bedded in properly or you will get the shudder.Harder driving like everyone else suggested is the order of the day!

Hey Nathan,

The Jetta is pulling stronger, it will defintely be a fun time working it down the track on Sunday.

For all those VW owners, now is the time too come and see what a basically stock 1.4TSi can do with a chip upgrade. It would be great to see you guys come out and support us during the Drag and Wind event.

See you there.

The Jetta is basically a stock 1.4TSi with a chip upgrade from Nathan.

We also have deleted the 2 exhaust barrels and replaced it with a free flowing rear barrel (same diameter pipe). Suspension wise, all we did was install Eibach springs on stock shocks...... and yes the Jetta has a stock DSG gearbox.

When you do come to the event, feel free to introduce yourself to me, I'll be wearing a black race suit with a black cowboy hat :P

Thousands of Renault Clios recalled for safety checks
Last updated at 18:08 22 May 2007

Thousands of Renault Clios have been recalled for safety checks after the bonnet of one of the cars blew open at 70mph, shattering a windscreen.
The BBC's consumer programme Watchdog has reported on the Clio's bonnet clips and a petition on the Downing Street website, with 217 signatures so far, calls on the Prime Minister to conduct an independent inquiry into the "faulty" bonnets.
The petition claims more than 250 cases of Renault Clio Mark II bonnets flying open during normal use have been reported to Watchdog and Renault.
It urges the car firm to recall these cars and accept responsibility.
Earlier this month, the Driving Standards Agency decided that Renault Clio II and the Renault Campus models manufactured between 1998 and early 2006 cannot be used for driving tests unless the candidate can provide documentary evidence that the bonnet catch has been checked.
"We are recalling all Clio II owners into the Renault network as part of our reassurance plan.
"The bonnet catch mechanism of the Clio II is safe, reliable and fit for purpose providing the vehicle is maintained correctly and the bonnet is closed as prescribed."
The firm said it has taken action by writing to all 470,000 Clio II owners in the UK inviting them into their nearest dealership so the bonnet mechanisms can be checked.
In cases of poor maintenance, the firm has also offered to carry out the appropriate corrective action for free as a gesture of goodwill.
