we have some areas with terrible flat curves,
eg east bound just before trincity, southbound before caroni turnoff when many accidents occur on a daily basis

I expect even when the speed limit is raised to the world average of 100km the beat would not abate and men would say it too slow and they falling asleep still.

The problem is lawlessness, from the gunman, to the bandit, to the driver.

.. to the police.

All them road design specs. For thr highway, Frontier handled all those at 120.

I am not an engineer, so I am not debating the engineering.
What I am saying, is real world experience, the vehicles are quite capable, compared to donkey carts.

Drove down Rio claro, where signs are frequently posted 50km. Most of the trip was between 65 and 80. But some where the signs were actually posted 50, 40 was a better speed to be going at just in case u need to stop abruptly.

So, whom ever choosing what specs to design road, kinda not doing real world testing to see if the calculations actually fit when applied.

... or it could be that my linglong tyres are way better engineered than expected.

Btw, I tried to remain below 50, but when police start to over take me, I loose it.

Not because you can navigate at a certain speed means all vehicles can do it and limits be raised. Lots of corners on highway I take at 200+ but to use that to justify raising the limit would be foolish.

Honestly I never take any of them northbound/southbound bends at over 180kph. maybe the one after Freeport on the north ah reach one-ninety something. And even then I never attempt to hold my side (switching lanes to avoid body-roll). Never try the south at that spot tho. Saw a nasty crash some years back right there. Change my driving style since. :(

Have done all central to south highway bends at 140 to 160 3-5 times weekly for 2 years straight.

But that's with a Jetta, drove an RD1 CRV and did 100 to 110 before safely for about 1 year before that because that speed felt safe with the CRV.

Claxton bay sweeping downhill corner, gasporillo sweeping corner 200-220. Freeport corner northbound left lane 170, right lane 150 cuz of that sink in d road. Freeport corner southbound 200. Straights on north and southbound 240. East west highways 200-220 in sections. Kamla new highway heading debe 240. Speaking of which, visibility on that new highway at speed is better than on the old one.

Also Not no switching lane thing either while taking corners. If you have to do that...you're going too fast.

So I ask, notwithstanding the prevalence of potholes and undulations on the highway as well as the lack of devices to prevent crossing the median on a large portion of the highways, are our highways capable of a 110km/h speed limit, should a revision take place, and if not what can be done to achieve this?

The vertical and horizontal geometry of the our highways are in all likelihood designed for a design speed of 100km/h. The design calculations that I have seen for sections of the Solomon Hochoy Highway have the design speed as 100km/h.

Just from a legal standpoint, no government will set a speed limit on the road that exceeds the design speed. They will open up themselves to lawsuits from idiots who get into accidents and have smart lawyers.

From a technical standpoint, if you want to raise the speed limit above the design speed on the existing road geometry,, you can do any, or a combination of, the following:

1) Increase the superelevation on horizontal curves. This is easy to do, but there is a limit to what you can increase it to after which going around the curve will not feel natural to the driver (unless your name is Kevin Harvick or Carl Edwards).
2) Increase the radii of horizontal curves. This is not so easy as you would have to widen the road and this may involve land acquisition.
3) Increase the radii of vertical curves. This is not so easy as you would have to fill and/or cut to re-profile the vertical curve.
4) Install high friction grip coatings on the existing road surface on the curves. This is easy to install but not so cheap as we would have to import the aggregates. These coatings would also have to be maintained and, as we all know, maintenance is not really a priority in Trinidad and Tobago.

I'll be blunt. Some of the terms you used were a little above my head for now, but nothing Google can't solve along with a little common sense. thanks for the response.

Had the police had speed guns and caught you doing those speeds would you still pay the same $1000.00 ticket? Or would it be more?

Why do I get the funny feeling that as soon as the good doctor Rowley returns to our shores he gonna shoot down Colm and say the government has no plans at this time to increase the speed limits at this time.

Anyone can confirm what the speed limit is for the PBR. I doubt it is as high as 80.

However I use the PBR daily via red bands maxis and from having waze on intermittently I can say that most of those Maxis reach up to 75/80 on open stretches. I wonder if Police going and clamp down on speeding on the PBR too?

Pretty sure if they clocked you at that speed and got you to stop they would probably arrest you.

Haha, stay there and think so.

At very least they would charge you for reckless driving as well.

Point is, what ever turning radius or elevation curve they use to calculate max speed, is clearly not lining up with real world practise. Me, with a lifted van, can do 120 at a slow pace, safely.
120 seems to be reasonable.

Taking 100, though.

What they need to do is clamp down on reckless driving.
