folks we need anti carjacking measures
cars need to be equipped with facial recognition to only allow the owner to drive it

If its using sim card to send signal...there have been GSM and gps jammers for a long time....I have a few somewhere...small like a cigarette pack...use to jam signal 10 or 15 feet in all directions

Unless it was a carjacking, don't these cars have computer thingies required for the car to start up - like computerized keys or such?

Plenty new model Kia's being stolen.

all modern cars, suv kia hyuandai etc are chip key
hence why they are typically car jacked in malls and places by surprised so the owner has to hand over keys

those cars are in demand for home invasions / murders as they don’t raise suspicion like a tiida

is only older cars and trucks don’t use chipkey

the best defence is some kind of authentication that the driver had to do after starting car or facial recognition

so if they take the car while it already started with a chip key but leave the key behind would it cut off?

It won't until you turn off the ignition. Then it can't start again. It won't shut down if it doesn't receive the signal. Because if you're driving and your key fob battery dies, what then for the legit owner? The fob is always sending out a signal and if it's close enough to the receiving computer in the car, then it will encrypted handshake and say this is authorized to turn on the ignition circuit. Which is why you should keep your keys in a closed metal box/Faraday cage while at home so they can't do a relay attack.

But remember now it really have nothing that can deter professional car thieves who have the proper hacking equipment and software. I using a steering lock too these days, but again, that can easily be bypassed by a determined prepared thief.

the chip doesn’t require power
it is rfid based just like those cards places use to unlock doors
the receiver is right by the steering column

carjackers not interested in hotwiring or removing gps alarm, they just want you to hand over key so they could go quickly

once they escape to their areas then they would park car to see if gps coming for it or trying and remove gps

Exactly this, when you hear a car was found "abandoned" right after being stolen, its because they park it up to see if GPS/CarSearch/Police coming for the car.

How do high tech thieves steal luxury vehicles without a key?
Step 1:
The gang hold up an electronic device to try and pick up the signal from the owner's key which is inside the house

Step 2:
The electronic device fools the key into broadcasting its code which is then used to unlock the car

Step 3:
Once the alarm is disabled, the thief is able to press the starter button and drive off in the luxury car

Step 4:
Often stolen to order, the cars are put into shipping containers which can prevent their trackers from operating while they are exported overseas

that’s the fancy key fobs though
not typical where you press button to send unlock signal
otherwise the key is physically rf off
