From Rags to Riches… PNM MINISTER IN MULTI MILLION$ HOUSING DEAL

Image

OUR COVER STORY by PETER GREEN

For months, residents of Picton Street, Newtown, have been asking the same question – who is building a new five-storey apartment complex on their street? Sources did advise that it is owned by a senior PNM Government Minister, though on record the development is being built by Belgrave Properties Limited, with registered offices at 41 Rosalino Street, Woodbrook.

We checked the company’s registry only to ascertain that the Directors of Belgrave Limited are Colm Imbert, Minister of Finance, his wife Suzanne Williams-Imbert and his son, Adrian Imbert all at #49 Lisa Avenue, Hillsboro, Maraval.

Image

The genesis of this apartment complex started three years ago when an old house on a vast property was sold. The house was eventually demolished and the site cleared. The property had a new owner who no one knew then. Sometime in 2018, piles of steel were driven into the ground, causing some distress to many aged residents on Picton Street. Complaints were made to the Port-of-Spain City Corporation, but all fell on deaf ears and many say that this is due to the influence of the powerful Minister of Finance in the Rowley government on the Port of Spain City Council and especially Mayor Joel Martinez whom we shall leave for another day.

According to a resident, the construction is supervised by the Minister’s son and all the approvals for the construction of the property were made in record time. Many persons are also asking if the relevant disclosures have been made to the Integrity Commission (IC) and not simply a share in the company by the Minister. No one can say how many workers are presently employed on the project but it has been said that the Imberts have taken advantage of the influx of Venezuelans to get cheap labour.

There are quite a number of Venezuelans on the project, and what makes it easier for the Imberts, is that those foreigners live on the same Picton street very close to the project. Residents have said that the Imberts kicked in the minimum wage order with the workers getting $15 and $16 an hour. Residents are divided about the housing complex in their area.

Although they say that progress is inevitable, some say that the pristine beauty of their area is going away.
Residents lamented that had it not been for the clout of Minister Imbert no approvals would have been obtained for such a housing complex at that location. The residents also say that crime has already taken over the Newtown area and they feel such a complex will attract more criminals.

As the 2020 General Election approaches more and more PNM ministers are buying up properties especially in the city of Port of Spain and environs. Some of the properties are eventually rented by the government at fantastic fees and while all of this is taking place hundreds of thousands have been dismissed by the government and are living below the poverty line.

Many persons are questioning how can a Minister who had difficulty in paying bills over the years can become so wealthy in less than four years? This is the question on the lips of not only the residents of Picton Street in Port of Spain but of the national community.

Many remember the derogatory remarks that the late Patrick Manning had made on this Minister before his death and are now wondering if everything that Manning had warned against is now true.

The Project

The Complex is called the Allora Apartment Complex. It is a brand new development encompassing luxury living, a fantastic location, 20 modern apartments divided among five floors, scenic mountain and city views all within walking distance to the Queen’s Park Savannah. All 20 apartments have been pre-sold at a price of $2.75 million each, making it a whopping $55 million on the complex. Work is proceeding at full speed, with completion expected sometime in 2020.

Each apartment will consist of three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, open plan layout, laundry, and private balcony.
There are covered and uncovered parking, vehicular entry and exit gates, and elevator access. Aspiring apartment owners have been asked to pay a ten percent deposit, 10 percent for foundation, 10 percent for the roof, with the balance of 70 percent on completion.

On another forum around that time there was a staunch defender of all the poo-poo that was PNM. When the shot call Ms. Lady apparently was the recipient of one of those "scholarships" and was livin' it up in foreign too.

Soldiers, technicians, US$500,000 for Bahamas

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has announced that this country will send troops to the Bahamas, as well as electricity technicians and US$500,000 in funds.

The prime minister made the announcement at yesterday’s post-Cabinet media conference as he outlined this government’s commitment to help the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country which has been ravaged by Hurricane Dorian.

“We’re all exposed to it from time to time and we never know when our time will come so we should focus on that and keep of Bahamas in the forefront,” Dr Rowley said.

The Category 5 hurricane hit the Abaco islands and Grand Bahama on Sunday and left a trail of death and destruction.

Dr Rowley said he had contacted the Prime Minister of Bahamas Dr Hurbert Minnis who indicated what was needed immediately, one of those being trained and disciplined manpower to maintain law and order.

“We have agreed to take steps, all necessary steps. The Minister of National Security has been instructed to work with the Chief of Defence Staff and make available to the government of Bahamas for their direction and use immediately 100 persons from our Defence Force,” the prime minister said.

The T&T soldiers will work closely with troops of the Jamaican Defence Force.

Dr Rowley said Minister Stuart Young will give further details on this at a later date.

Major parts of the country’s infrastructure have been severely hit and it is expected that they will be without electricity for a long time. It is for this reason the decision was taken to send personnel from the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC).

“We have agreed to give to the Bahamas a number, starting with about seven technical people from T&TEC to go to the Bahamas and work with the Bahamas government and agencies on the subject of restoration of power,” the prime minister said.

He said that number may increase when the circumstances become better known.

The third area of aid being offered is financial assistance as the prime minister will give US$500,000 dollars to the government of Bahamas to help pay for expenses, especially medical supplies.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and St Lucian Prime Minister Allen Chastanet visited the Bahamas yesterday to hold talks with Dr Minnis about relief efforts. They arrived at the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau shortly before 9 am.

According to Mottley’s Facebook page, they were greeted by several Bahamian government ministers, including Minister of Tourism Dionsio D’Aguliar, Minister of Education Jeffery Lloyd and Minister of Transport Renwood Wills among other dignitaries.

Both prime ministers were accompanied by Caricom Secretary-General Irwin La Roque and were later whisked away for a closed-door meeting with Minnis at the National Emergency Management Administration (NEMA) office.

In a Facebook post, Mottley indicated that the meeting, which also included members of NEMA, was to allow the other regional leaders to receive a “very thorough briefing of the situation at hand, including reports from the Ministry of Works, Director of Environmental Health, Ministry of Public Health, Commissioner of Police, the Bahamas Defence Force and Department of Social Services.”

Dorian ripped through the Abaco Islands and island of Grand Bahama, leaving a trail of destruction behind.

The first large relief ship arrived in the northwest Bahamas on yesterday morning, with tugboats ferrying pallets of water bottles, boxes of cereal and 10,000 hot and cold meals from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship to battered Freeport.

Governments and non-profit organisations from several countries are offering money, workers and other aid to help with the rescue and recovery efforts.

According to the Red Cross, about 45 per cent of the homes on Grand Bahama and Abaco—about 13,000 houses—are believed to have been severely damaged or destroyed as a result of the storm, and some 62,000 people will need clean drinking water, the Associated Press reported yesterday.

United Nations officials said that more than 60,000 people will need food assistance.

Meanwhile, stories of love and care have been pouring in from around the world.

An anonymous man from Florida bought 100 generators to help the victims of the hurricane.

A news report stated, “His receipt read US$49,285.70 and most of that came from paying US$450 a pop for 100 generators. Peas, beans, coffee, salt, pepper and other essentials made up the rest of his mega purchase.”

A six-year-old boy from South Carolina used money that he saved for his birthday trip to Disney World to help the hurricane victims.

Disney Cruise Line announced that they’ll donate $1 million in cash to help the hurricane victims. The money will go to relief efforts as well.

A four-year-old donated his entire piggy bank to help the victims. He wanted to help the kids in the Bahamas and supply them with toys.

The last time Trinidad and Tobago was called upon to offer aid to a regional neighbour, was when a Category 5 hurricane hit Dominica in September 2017.

Apart from a large amount of assistance from NGOs and the private sector, the government also sent troops to the island and a helicopter operated by the National Helicopter Services.

Interesting that government always seem to have money for everything, except to help the Trinidadian citizens.

No problem with helping our neighbours in times of need for I'm sure they have done the same.

Anyone knows what assistance the Bahamas offered/sent when we get flood out last year?... :?
