Local Arima

Santa Rosa First People’s Heritage Water Ritual

Over 50 representatives from various indigenous communities from Belize, Suriname, Guatemala, Guyana, Dominica, St Vincent, Australia, Canada and the US visited Trindad and Tobago during Santa Rosa First People's Heritage week.

The Water Ritual was held at the Blanchisseuse River, which runs through the First Peoples’ community in the town of Arima on October 13, 2016.

Water is an important element of nature, as is the wind, fire, and air.

The continuous flow of the River symbolises the ancestors’ continuity and boundless journey.

For the Indigenous Peoples water is life and in paying tribute to the water they see the manifestation of their ancestors in nature.

Local Chalta

Chalta also known as Elephant Apple is a fruit that is said to be native to China although it is found right here in Trinidad and Tobago.

The fruit thrives in swamps and semi -tropical forests in deep soil and humid atmosphere.

The fruit is also said to possess tonic and laxative properties and is used for abdominal pains.

The bark and leaves are astringent.

Dried leaves are used as a substitute for sand paper in polishing ivory and horn.

Ripe fruits are gathered at maturity.

Fleshy sepals form the edible portion.

Though the fruits contain enough sugars, still these taste pleasantly sour due to the predominance of acid.

These are seldom eaten raw and are mostly used as flavouring in curries and are also made into jams and jellies.

The fruit contains carbohydrates and proteins. It is also rich in beta-carotene, vitamin B, vitamin C, thiamine, and riboflavin

Local Anteater ~ Protected Wildlife

The animal in the left hand of this proud young man is an anteater, southern tamandua (T. tetradactyla).

This is the second one posted as being killed this season.

This is a protected animal whose slaughter is illegal and downright immoral.

Most of you may never see one alive and hardly ever in the wild.

What is even more saddening is the fact that the anteaters which exist here in Trinidad are found no where else in the world.. that's right , they are endemic.

So when the recreational killers are done shooting each and every one, the world will thank Trinidad for their EXTINCTION!

Local conservation groups have condemning poachers and their destruction of protected wildlife.

They are calling for the man in the photo to be questioned and the matter investigated.

The Southern Tamandua, and three-toed Anteater, or Matapel, are both protected under the Conservation of Wildlife Act.

Hunting these animals is a punishable offence and liable to a fine of $1000.00 dollars or to imprisonment for 3 months.

People of Trinidad and Tobago ~ James Castagne-Hay

Age 10yrs, St. Andrews Private School

I have been competing in triathlons since the age of 5.

I tried the first one because I like swimming, running and riding.

Swimming is the most challenging discipline for me because of all the training required to perfect techniques.

Running and riding come more naturally to me.

It is hard to pick which one I prefer - maybe riding.

I like the challenge of longer distances.

I look forward to and enjoy the challenges presented in the schools multi-sport series.

I think competing is fun and like making new friends.

When I do not win I feel a bit sad but I learn what I need to work harder at and try to improve.

My goal is to try to be the best and hope to represent T&T at the Junior Olympics and one day at the Olympics.

Between 2012 and 2016 I have placed from 1st to 6th in all of my races.

The highlights were being the National Duathlon Champion in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in my age group and being the National Triathlon Champion in 2015 in my age group.

Local Surfing

Taking Advantage of the Big Waves This Week

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) urges citizens to be vigilant and safe on the nations beaches.

Long period swells may result in increased wave heights along the North coast of Trinidad and the sheltered coastlines of Tobago, resulting in battering waves.

Local Ramleela - 1

Meaning “the play of Rama”, is a ten-day Hindu festival that takes place during the months of October to November.

Ramleela commemorates the exploits of Prince Rama as described in the epic The Ramayana.

Following the life of the deity Rama, Ramleela ends in the burning of Ravan, the demon king of the story.

Considered the oldest open-air theatre in the Caribbean, Ramleela waned in popularity in the 1970’s and 80’s, but today has grown tremendously, with over 25 Ramleela sites, and has become more organised, with a National Ramleela Council.

This year, 2016, marks the 25th Anniversary of the existence of the National Ramleela Council of Trinidad and Tobago Inc
