Owners therefore, are being urged to ramp-up safety measures to safeguard against thieves, police advised during a weekly police media briefing at the Police Administration Building, Sackville Street, Port-of-Spain on Thursday.
According to Sgt Shala Julien of the Police Service's Stolen Vehicles Squad
data compiled by the unit over the past year, showed Nissan Tiidas were among those most targeted by bandits
This was followed by the Toyota Aquas, Nissan AD Wagons and Wingroads and Toyota Fielder Wagons.
Julien also noted that the Kia K2700 and Hyundai H100 vans were also highly sought by criminals.
In sharing safety measures to owners Julien said, "We would advise people to install a shift lock or steering lock which can make it difficult for thieves. Install an interior monitoring system which can detect movement after the vehicle has been locked.”
Additionally, he said vehicle owners should consider a GSM car alarm which enables a message to be sent to the subscriber if the vehicle is broken into.
Further, owners can also put in a GPS tracking system, which allows the owner to know the precise location of the vehicle at all times.
In providing statistics Julien said between January 1 and June 1, 2023 there were 691 reports of stolen vehicles.
He further explained of this figure 34 per cent of vehicles stolen were from the Northern Division, which extended from St Joseph to Arima and La Horquetta.
Regarding the stolen vehicle recovery rate, Julien said this 39 per cent.

Dem local thief rel high tech when they ready though. This is the gang that police need to track, not dem old Tiida ring.

They could just tack on an annual subscription on that final price contracted though one of those firms and make so much more money because anybody buying a new vehicle going to take it.
