Re: Project S14.5 Spec R, Finally Seeing the Light!!!

Postby TriniGT » September 19th, 2010, 5:22 pm

Well after months of having the car up on stands I decided to bite the bullet and put her on the ground and somewhat set my ride height. Funny thing is that the adjustment of the coilovers to obtain the proper ride height had me adjusting nearly all on one side and half on the other which I found was weird. It still needs adjusting properly but it is much better than it was and the rear, especially the passenger rear, has some serious camber which when I get some time I will sort out. What was even more exciting was that I drove the car in my yard, no brakes at all so with the help of the handbrake I was able to manouvre the car to a better spot. All I can say is the 4.37 diff is quite aggressive. Finally in the last five years this was my first time actually reversing the car and parking her. Even had wifee in for the first move, she was actually half proud of me. Only took a couple shots and no I have still not sorted the brakes but I did mount the Brembos to the front of the car, still waiting to pickup the rear setup but for now I may just run stock Nissan two pot calipers.

I need to get proper brake hard lines as the ones I have are too short and too long, I may cut the longer ones and flare the ends to suit, we'll see. I have a plan to somehow align the front of the car properly which entails elongating the fender holes and sliding the front nose section of the car to the passenger side, in so doing leaving the upper area in the same position and the lower area by the headlight in the proper positon. We'll see how that one goes. Anyway here are some pics, does not look like much propgress but I still need to wait on the painter to give me a repsray. Once that is completed then it is time for the power FC, Z32 MAF, boost controller, turbo timer and defi gauges and an oil cooler and a road tune followed by a dyno tune to clean up anything.

When she first came off the stands, yes the front needed some lowering

Did some adjusting on the coilovers but I wanna let it settle first then I will adjust some more,

Well done GT. Dat looking better than the 34 for some strange reason. 8-) Serious.

Maybe because I've seen it in parts before u got the 34. Good luck with the rest of the project. At least u from up my side so I might spot it on the road when u bring it out

Well when you look at little things you will notice the S14 features, things like the center console not able to bolt to the flooring as the bolt holes are in different locations. To fix this I will be getting a flat bracket made so that it can bolt as the back of the center console currently is just sitting there. The other thing that is different that most may not realize is that the firewall has the engine plate to the side on an S15 while the plate for the S14 is directly above the booster.

There is also no area to bolt the rear bar below as on the S15 there is an extra bar that runs underneath to the rear of the engine bolting from one side of the chassis to the other, the S14 does not have the provision for this and I was not gonna cut the chassis to put two extra studs on it to fit it. Other than that I have the S15 radio amp harness to run in the roofing area so the roof interior and some other items will need to be removed for the installation. I got two ends of the harness and joined it as every front half and back cut has it butchered so got two and made one and had it tested for continuity so hopefully it works, only one way to find out. My biggest issue is my wheels, the rear is fine but the front needs to have spacers fitted as the inside of the wheel rubs slightly on the coilovers and now with the spacers the outer wheel is protruding past the fender and I don't wanna be running ridiculous camber as this is going to be my daily and tyre wear will be an issue. The rear can be adjusted and then the fenders can be pulled, rolled and flared if necessary. For now I am gonna try some other 18's and see how the fitment is in regards to coilover and caliper and fender and of course it has to go with the look of the car, decisions decisions :D.

Got some for the front, Rashid tried to help outbut the lines are way short. Tried setting the ride height again on the front but it still needs further altering, I may actually have to remove the helper springs but we'll see. I am still having some fitment issues up front and not quite sure how to address it, the biggest problem is the driver side light is sitting to much forward, I may have to keep playing with it until it fits but it is really stressing me. I have the fenders fitted properly and the fender to door fitment is spot on, I just need to work out the bonnet fitment. Front bumper somehow needs some more trimming to fit properly. Today I am fitting some substitute rear Nissan two Piston Calipers so that I can at least bleed the system by first bench bleeding the MBC and then the entire system from furthest from MBC to closest. Same time when I am installing the rear brakes I will adjust the camber on my passenger side as it is off considerably but having the adjustable rear suspension it should not be too bad, will also need to raise the passenger side as well as it is slightly lower than the rest.

As for the interior I may be getting my hands on a pair of Recaros so I may opt for them and sell the entire S15 interior. Also will be installing the Blitz Turbo Timer, Blitz Boost Controller and Defi gauges that I got along with the speakers and stereo to finish off the interior for now until I get my Defi DIN panel setup which I have not ordered to date :D. Car is going by end of week to respray so it will be back home in a month or thereabouts. Will keep you guys posted.

I may keep the GTR wheels for now once I can get them to somehow fit, maybe with a slight pull on the fenders as later on I intend to use wider front fenders. Other than that I really like the Work KAI wheels so we will see when or if money comes around. And after all the worries with the RB26 head I was waiting on the machinist said he will be done with the head by Friday. Guides are removed already and the squish pads are too being removed and then some light porting on the intake and porting and polishing on the exhaust. Not sure what is going to happen with all the parts, may just build it up and tuck it away or sell it. Don't think I will use all the parts on it at this point but just build it back with stock pistons and rods and new rings and give it a general fresh job and probably sell it, well see when I reach that bridge.

Well finally installed the rear brake calipers, not brembos but nissan two pot calipers for now until I get the Brembos. I filled the Skyline MBC and began the bench bleeding process, was a real beyotch of a job as the MBC was installed already. I took two old ABS lines and attached them to the MBC and bent the cut ends into the MBC reservoir as low as possible so that when the brake fluid is filled the end of the lines is below the fluid level. You need to make sure the fluid is always above the end of the hardline and then simply keep pumping the brake pedal and watch the bubble come out.

It took me countless tries, even had the wifee take a swing at it and then after about fifteen minutes of doing it the pedal became harder and harder. The trick now was to have wifee hold the pedal down while I disconnected both cut lines and quickly reattach the original brakelines. Got that all done so now all left to do is to bleed the entire brake system which is from furthest from MBC to nearest. I will tackle that tomorrow. Car is pretty much done for now until it goes to the shop to paint, at that point I will help with tape off and remove what needs removing and then have the car done and brought back home and then finish install everything along with whatever I have waiting for her. I am getting there once brakes are doen tomorrow I will feel much more confident, this DIYer is turning pro .

Thanks been a long time coming but I am definitely getting there. Will get a shot of her today when I get home before she goes into the cave for a respray. Stance still has to be set. I am trying in any way possible to keep the GTR wheels on her, failing that I am seeing a set of Works CR Kais in my life or maybe some Weds or Work VS-KF if the price is right, which it never is , but we will see how that thought goes.

Nope they on the ER34 GTT. Gonna sell them with the skyline, would have liked to keep them as a spare but will look around again for something of the sort. Actually I will try them on the Silvia and see if they stick out like the GTR wheels but I really don't wanna sell those GTR wheels, I have severals emails for them already.

Those ar ethe new TE37SL wheels very limited right now and that is a friends S15 conrad. There are only a few sets of those released from Rays Japan right now and they are limited as well making the price considerably higher. They look sweet but definitely out of my budget and they can't fit my car as he is sporting the Vertex Ridge Widebody so the +12mm offset is proper for it not my stock fender setup. Oh if money were not an option ........sigh. Gonna bleed the brakes tomorrow and carry her for a back road tour and see how she feels, check for leaks and whatnot and then park her up and wait for the painter. May also be changing the painter as well but we'll see what happens.

Quick Update, NO MORE E-BRAKING, BRAKES HAVE BEEN BLED!!!!. Note-to-self, don't order so much brake fluid. I picked up three bottles of Motul 5.1 from W2J thinking that hey that should be enough to do the job, in the end only used one bottle and that is with topping up at the end. First job was the MBC which with the help of wifee went sweet as at the time had no other help. One thing I forgot in all the comotion was to clean the R32 GTR MBC Reservoir so took a couple of napkins and tried cleaning the thick residue of crud to the bottom, a lot of gunk came out but I couldn't get it all. After bleeding the MBC the fluid quickly turned darkish in colour so the plan was to bleed all the dark fluid via the calipers.

Yesterday after running around thanks to Dry , no sweat he's a good youth, I came back and decided to tackle this bleeding thing and hopefully put it to rest. Remember furthest from MBC to nearest. Started by first checking the MBC to see if it had sufficient fluid and then gave it some extra. Next step was to pump the brakes now to actually allow fluid to move from the MBC reservoir through the dry brake lines as they have been disconnected for some five odd years and I thought that they would surely be somewhat clogged. So as my friend pumped the brakes the fluid level dropped and I continued topping up until the pedal became firm and then I started the bleeding process.

Passenger rear first, remember pump a couple of times then hold the pedal firmly and then crack the nipple and try to lock off before the pedal hits the ground and repeat. To minimize mess I had a bottle and some clear silicone air hose connected to the nipple and placed in the bottle and tried to have the bottom of the hose under the level of the brakefluid in the bottle. Got the rear done no probs, the front are Brembo R34 GTR Calipers so they had two bleed nipples, I am guessing one nipple per side of pistons, tackled those first inner and then outer and in no time I couldn't believe how easy they bled. Only thing different was that the Brembos nipple needed a 11mm spanner unlike the rear which use 10mm. Eventually once I get my rear Brembos I will make the swap but for now I need the car up and running to go to the shop for a respray. After that I took the battery from the good ole faithful bluebird and dropped it in the trunk and connected and bounce starter and just lightly came off the brakes and tip the gas and then applied brakes and what do you know we have brakes without the ebrakes :D. Quickly the rusted rotors came back to life. The brake pedal I am sure will need a second bleed and the brake pedal is a slight bit spongy but I definitely have brakes and will be more than enough to take her to the shop safely. Once the brake pads have bedded and the rear Brembos swapped on I will bleed again but this is one less thing on the list. Next thing hopefully today is to firther trim the front bumper and get the bonnet locking again to go to the shop and then stuff the sideskirts in the car along with whatever else needs going and await the call to bring her down. All my gadgets will go on afterwards no sweat. Wanna try and get the Defi DIN gauges ordered in time for the car coming home, exciting times I tell ya!!!.
