Former St Lucia PM hails UNC leader as 'visionary'

ALLEN Chastanet, opposition leader and former prime minister of St Lucia, defined UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar as a “visionary” and tipped her to become TT’s next PM.

Chastanet also divulged plans to create a body for opposition leaders from the region to ensure their voices were heard by the Caribbean Development Bank, World Bank, and Caricom.

He delivered a vibrant address at the UNC’s anti-crime talks in Sangre Grande, on Monday night.

“I am here tonight to stand in solidarity with your former prime minister, and more particularly because she is a leader of the opposition,” Chastanet told a packed audience.

“I am here tonight to give her support and say that she is in the right direction.

“She is setting an example for all the other leaders of opposition that our job is not just to protest or oppose (but to) create platforms like today to give the people a voice to speak.”

Chastanet congratulated the opposition leader for developing the country and creating a platform for people affected by crime to speak out.

“Our constitutions officially include the Office of the Leader of the Opposition as part of our government.

Armed with a copy of St Lucia’s constitution, which he described as a contract between the citizens and government providing the safety of citizens, among other protections.

“One of the things that the constitution does is to enshrine liberties and rights to all of us and to make sure that government does not use its power against anyone in our country. It cannot use that power to oppress and suppress the rights of individual citizens in our country,” he said.

The general safety of citizens is not something they should be grateful for.

“The constitution requires every government to provide that security to all of us,” Chastanet said, adding that citizens should not be burdened with additional costs to protect themselves and private property.

Chastanet said cycles of crime affect all Caribbean islands, including St Lucia, largely owing to the movement of guns and drugs by international cartels, forcing the need for a more stringent regional security system.

He suggested airport taxes could be used to fund the operation and protect the region, adding that St Lucia had already made such a commitment.

“I want to know that the brightest and the best police officers will now be working for that regional organisation,” he said.

“One of the first things we must accept is that crime is no longer national. The gangs which are creating the most problems in our country – they are regional and international networks.”

Paray: UNC needs fresh executive to tackle PNM



United National Congress (UNC) chairman Dave Tancoo says anyone can aspire to be Prime Minister or UNC Leader, but members must never allow the People’s National Movement to “distract us and divide us”, especially now after word of a general election due sometime soon.

Tancoo commented yesterday on recent issues where the UNC had been spotlighted, the latest including increased signals by UNC Mayaro MP Rushton Paray of his interest in the party’s leadership post and Paray’s view that members want an opportunity to refresh their National Executive.

Paray, who has been the Mayaro MP since 2015, aired those views in a Power 102 FM interview.

The UNC leadership’s term is up in 2025. Traditionally, the party retains the leader and executive it has when entering an election year, in order to prevent the party from being divided in fighting political opponents. UNC’s Natex term is up to June, officials said recently.

Paray did not answer Guardian Media’s calls or texted queries yesterday. But in his radio comments, Paray claimed UNC’s “membership really want to have an opportunity to refresh or reset in terms of UNC’s Natex”. He said that meant, “We need the best version of the UNC to take the PNM head-on in 2025 and there must be an opportunity for the party to decide whether we’re at the best version of ourselves right now, or we need a new team to give us the best version.”

Paray said he was not surprised “people or constituents or the membership” felt he had something of value to offer in providing guidance and leadership at the end of the day, and the “membership will decide that when the time comes”.

On what he wants, Paray had said, “I don’t think there’s a police constable who joins the TTPS who doesn’t want to be Police Commissioner.”

Paray’s comments were circulated on social media and was promoted by some members asking if people would support him for leader.

UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar didn’t respond to texted queries on Paray’s statements, nor did UNC deputy leaders Roodal Moonilal, David Lee and Jearlean John.

But chairman Tancoo said, “Some of us have worked 30-plus years to build a strong, resilient party that will allow any citizen, who shares the same philosophy of patriotic unity for national development, to join and aspire.

“Ours is a democratic party in a democratic country. Anyone can aspire to be Prime Minister or UNC Leader. In fact, many have and many will continue to so do. That’s the essence of democracy.

“However, we must never allow the PNM to distract us and divide us, especially after word of an election due sometime ‘soon’.

“The work of thousands over the decades to build a united party makes it attractive now to many. We didn’t get here without strong leadership and dedicated patriots, many of whom simply want a better T&T. The mere fact so many are interested in the UNC as a vehicle for change, tells me our decades-long hard work is paying off.

“Our country is in the worst state it’s ever been in, with the average citizen traumatised by fear of criminals. It’s clear the people realise that only a united country will rescue citizens from this vindictive Government.”

A longstanding UNC Natex member, who did not want to be identified, yesterday added, “My question to Mr Rushton Paray is: what’s more important—removal of PNM which sent up food and fuel prices and crime? Or UNC’s Natex? In recent months, we’ve seen attacks by some with things that can go against the UNC and weaken it. When we voted on a President, three votes were spoilt—was it these persons?”

Paray’s recent statements were his latest on the UNC leadership.

After Persad-Bissessar’s recent statements about members being treated like “sheep” in the Basdeo Panday period, Paray called for people to stand up to those who “mocked” Panday. Persad-Bissesar subsequently said she never mocked Panday and loved him as her guru. She’d said general election nominations are closing in a while and ”as expected,” some who did no work were looking for trivial non-issues to improve their prospects.

Paray’s profile has increased in the last year, with engagements with local and foreign personalities on his constituency’s behalf. Last year, after Paray spoke on a television show about Venezuela, verbal stones about “Mickey Mouse business” were pelted at him and other MPs by UNC’s Moonilal and Barry Padarath.

Moonilal said there was one party, one leader and one vision and if there was no leadership election and people were campaigning, “they had to be delusional”.

Keith Rowley was fired by Manning and went on the warpath exposing Manning for hiding corruption in Udecott. It is a false notion that PNM hides their dirty laundry, many ambitious people are willing to take out those at the top.

However, to equate PNM's dirty laundry and UNC's is false as well. UNC has been scandal-ridden since the Panday admin which caused its own collapse in his second term. PEP at UNC Meeting

POLITICAL leader of the Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) Phillip Edward Alexander entered the United National Congress (UNC) camp on Monday with a team of his supporters.

The UNC held its Monday night cottage meeting at the Macaulay Community Centre in the Pointe-a-Pierre constituency.

About halfway through the meeting, the PEP supporters clad in orange arrived and walked straight into the crowded hall while UNC Senator Wade Mark was speaking garnering much attention from the UNC supporters.

UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar had not yet arrived.

Upon her arrival, she greeted supporters and in her feature presentation, she acknowledged Alexander’s presence along with his team, mentioning his name several times while she spoke.

Alexander listened intently to her speech, applauding and nodding his head in agreement to some parts, especially when she spoke about crime.

Upon leaving the location, Persad-Bissessar took the opportunity to greet and speak with him.

She told the media that she was not expecting to see PEP there at that meeting and when asked if she was happy that Alexander attended she responded: “Of course!”

Alexander’s presence follows his public statements that the PEP was supporting the UNC in the next general elections. But, he later said that he was not going to be a part of any partnership with political leader of the National Transformation Alliance (NTA) Gary Griffith. The NTA had teamed up with the UNC for local government elections.

Speaking at a political meeting in St Joseph on Saturday, Griffith said, “I give you the promise with one thing – I’m not going to sell my soul to get into government, and you’d have seen that. I’ll stand by certain principles. We saw what happened from 2010 to 2015—let’s be honest about it”

During her speech, Persad-Bissessar said her party was gearing up for the general election due next year although the date has not yet been announced.

She mentioned that she will continue to fight for her party and welcomed anyone who wants to be a part of it.

Kamla has tough choice to make

Recent hasty moves by National Transformation Alliance (NTA) leader Gary Griffith and his Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) counterpart Phillip Alexander to align themselves with the United National Congress (UNC) of Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar have raised more than a few eyebrows nationally, with political analyst Indira Rampersad aptly describing the actions as 'crab in a barrel' behaviour.

And while we are not about to tell Mrs Persad-Bissessar what she should and should not do, we stand on the side of those who are very sceptical about the political intentions of these two men and about whether they have anything of real benefit to offer the UNC.

The Opposition Leader would therefore do well to tread carefully on any alliance with either the NTA or PEP at this time.

Undoubtedly Mrs Persad-Bissessar is aware of the need for such caution, which could explain her statement two weeks ago, which angered Mr Griffith, to the effect that she would not allow minor parties to dictate terms to the UNC ahead of the upcoming general elections campaign, while calling on them to demonstrate what they could bring to the table.

The NTA leader, who recently expressed confidence in his party's ability to rally the support of 200,000 voters, swiftly fired back at Mrs Persad-Bissessar but promptly calmed down when he discovered that certain high-ranking members of the UNC were inclined to support him over Mr Alexander in any political accommodation.

At the same time, Mr Alexander, who spent the majority of the last five years criticising the UNC as being no different from the incumbent People’s National Movement (PNM), appeared to have gone into panic mode and did precisely what Mrs Persad-Bissessar had told the smaller parties not to do, by giving the UNC an ultimatum to choose between him and Mr Griffith.

Since then, the PEP leader has seemingly had a change of heart and is now saying that he is willing to work with Gary–the same man he wanted absolutely to do with less than a week prior and was dead-set against having as an alliance partner.

We can only hope that Mrs Persad-Bissessar and the UNC will see these political machinations for exactly what they are.

The Opposition Leader also needs to ask and answer for herself what exactly are the proven track records of Gary and Phillip, and how can they help the UNC politically at this time.

Also, can the UNC trust either of these men, or will their loyalties whittle away, based on the prevailing political breeze blowing on any given day?

Furthermore, what is the ultimate wish of Gary and Phillip? Is it to ultimately lead the UNC, or are they prepared to accept a lower status within the context of a political merger?

At the end of the day when all of these questions are asked and answered, Mrs Persad-Bissessar may well decide that the UNC under her leadership stands a better chance of defeating the PNM by going it alone.

Time will tell.
