Local Hunting
Sentry, scaffolding, sit down, stake out, these are names given to a traditional method of Hunting practiced in Trinidad. Observation is made by the hunter for areas where an animal feeds, or tracks where the animal passes. He then cut pieces of wood and tie these on a neighboring tree from where he has a clear view of the animal track or feed.
The pieces of wood are tied on the trees with vines from the forest. They are tied in such a manner so as to create a step facilitating an easy climb. At the top of the step two pieces are tied together creating a seat while another is tied for a foot rest.
The hunter climbs into this seat and awaits the animal with his shot gun, licenced or unlicenced depending on the status of the hunter. This method of hunting has been used to capture Agouti, Lappe and Deer, other animals that utilizes the said feed or a passing animal may also be shot.
This type of hunting allows for young and pregnant animals once identified by the hunter not to be shot.
The hunter in this hunt is exposed to the elements of rain and cold, sitting for long hours, insect bites. He must remain silent any movement, sound or smell from him would alert the animal and prevent it from approaching the feed or continuing on the track. This deviation would take the animal out of the reach of the hunter.
The success rate of this type of hunt is about 30%, however it is dependent on the stamina dedication and commitment of the hunter.
