Foreign travel advice
Trinidad and Tobago

Temporary Closure of Buccoo Reef Marine Park

Following a shark attack on a tourist at Turtle Beach/Courland Bay 26 April 2024, the Tobago authorities have temporarily closed the Buccoo Reef Marine Park (BRMP) until further notice. This closure is effective immediately and applies to all recreational activities, including snorkelling, diving, glass-bottom boat tours, and any other water-based activities within the park boundaries. The Tobago authorities strongly advise all beachgoers, fisherfolk, and mariners to exercise extreme caution when operating in the coastal areas surrounding Plymouth, Courland Bay, Black Rock, Mt. Irvine, Buccoo, Pigeon Point, Store Bay, and all areas in between. You should check and follow the advice of local authorities.

THA revokes $10,000 shark bounty

https://newsday.co.tt/2024/04/27/tha-revokes-10000-shark-bounty/

OWING to concerns from environmentalists, the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) has revoked the $10,000 bounty it offered to registered fishermen to capture the bull shark that attacked 64-year-old British visitor Peter Smith at Turtle Beach, on April 26.

At a Zoom news briefing late on April 26, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine said there was “some confusion” about the reward that was offered.

“During the course of the day a bounty went out offering $10,000 for registered fishers who can help us capture the bull shark. In some jurisdictions they refer to it as rescuing the bull shark, meaning being able to remove it from where it can cause harm to individuals to put it in a place where it can’t cause harm to individuals,” he said.

“So because there is some much confusion over the bounty that is out, I have asked for the ad to be retracted, effective immediately, and I have asked that the fishers work along with the Coast Guard, work along with the divers and other stakeholders to expertly man the area.”

Augustine said the Department of Marine Resources will continue to monitor the space.

Marine biologist: No shark threat in Tobago

The attack by a bull shark on tourist Peter Smith in Tobago waters yesterday was most likely unprovoked, said Zaheer Hosein, Fisheries Biologist and Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus.

He said T&T lies in the range of the bull shark which “stretches all the way from temperate waters in North America and in Europe, all the way down south as far as Brazil and Northern Argentina.”

According to ifaw.org, bull sharks can be found in shallow, warm, coastal waters worldwide and have the unique ability to tolerate freshwater and saltwater habitats.

However, Hosein admitted, “I have never really heard reports of bull sharks attacking anyone in Trinidad or Tobago for that matter, but we do lie in its range.”

He explained that there are two broad categories under which attacks could be triggered, provoked and unprovoked, and yesterday’s attack fell under the latter.

“As the name suggests, the individual had nothing to do with the organism but the shark still attacked,” he said

Categories of unprovoked attacks include hit and run, bump and bite and sneak attacks.

Hit-and-run attacks are prevalent but usually non-fatal, as the shark is likely checking to see if it is a prey item and would usually leave after “taking a bite.” Hosein said such attacks often occurred in the surf which is where Smith had reportedly been swimming when he was attacked.

He said the shark might have been confused and tried the hit-and-run tactic to “see if that individual was prey.”

You ever wonder how shark river got its name?

Bull sharks iirc like turbid waters and are fresh water tolerant. I stop swimming in dirty water long time. Swimming pools for me only thanks. To add insult to injury, our caimans seem to be salt water tolerant or brackish water at least. I don't wanna be a black caiman snack.

THA condemns slaughter of sharks at Buccoo

The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) yesterday “strongly condemned” the indiscriminate killing of over a dozen sharks at Buccoo, Tobago.

This shark kill comes six days after a 64-year-old British national was attacked by a bull shark at Turtle Bay, Tobago. Last Friday, THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine issued a $10,000 bounty for capturing the shark involved in the attack but was quickly recalled following a public outcry.

Yesterday, there was more public outcry after videos emerged of fishermen gutting and cleaning at least 13 sharks of different species and sizes on the coast of Buccoo.

This caught the attention of the THA’s Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment, and Sustainable Development.

In a statement, the division said, “We understand the concerns and fears arising from the recent incident. However, reacting to this isolated event by targeting and killing sharks indiscriminately is not only ineffective in preventing future incidents but also harmful to our marine biodiversity.”

They not only caught sharks, but predominantly bull sharks.
