THA revokes $10,000 shark bounty
https://newsday.co.tt/2024/04/27/tha-revokes-10000-shark-bounty/
OWING to concerns from environmentalists, the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) has revoked the $10,000 bounty it offered to registered fishermen to capture the bull shark that attacked 64-year-old British visitor Peter Smith at Turtle Beach, on April 26.
At a Zoom news briefing late on April 26, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine said there was “some confusion” about the reward that was offered.
“During the course of the day a bounty went out offering $10,000 for registered fishers who can help us capture the bull shark. In some jurisdictions they refer to it as rescuing the bull shark, meaning being able to remove it from where it can cause harm to individuals to put it in a place where it can’t cause harm to individuals,” he said.
“So because there is some much confusion over the bounty that is out, I have asked for the ad to be retracted, effective immediately, and I have asked that the fishers work along with the Coast Guard, work along with the divers and other stakeholders to expertly man the area.”
Augustine said the Department of Marine Resources will continue to monitor the space.

The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) yesterday “strongly condemned” the indiscriminate killing of over a dozen sharks at Buccoo, Tobago.
This shark kill comes six days after a 64-year-old British national was attacked by a bull shark at Turtle Bay, Tobago. Last Friday, THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine issued a $10,000 bounty for capturing the shark involved in the attack but was quickly recalled following a public outcry.
Yesterday, there was more public outcry after videos emerged of fishermen gutting and cleaning at least 13 sharks of different species and sizes on the coast of Buccoo.
This caught the attention of the THA’s Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment, and Sustainable Development.
In a statement, the division said, “We understand the concerns and fears arising from the recent incident. However, reacting to this isolated event by targeting and killing sharks indiscriminately is not only ineffective in preventing future incidents but also harmful to our marine biodiversity.”

They not only caught sharks, but predominantly bull sharks.
Farley should throw up a lion fish competition

Saw some guy in Florida do a catch and clean on a bull shark recently. They allowed one per day bc of population controls. He said the bull was good eatspugboy wrote:I thought it was black tip they use, also not big sharks since those tend to smell like peedeath365 wrote:More bake and shark for we.
