Re: Retaining Walls

Postby Toyopet » August 6th, 2015, 9:26 am

Guys, I don't want to start a new thread.

Basically I work for a contractor and one job that I am about to start (Design/Build) requires A LOT of retaining walls. Our design team has put forward two alternatives to the reinforced concrete retaining wall that would fit our application. They suggested 1) MSE walls such as that found on the Grand Bazaar and Aranguez over passes among others, and 2) Criblock retaining walls, which is more seen more often.

If anyone has experience working with these walls, I'm looking to make an informed decision based on cost, so help me maybe?

^^^ is that based on what your engineers suggest.

there are different alternatives however your company should really check with civil engineers to review and find out what is the best method.

You should also consider to do a soil test on the area if not already done so the best solution can be done

Yup, our design team is a reputable Civil Engineering Firm and based on the geotech reports, they suggested these wall types for consideration.

What about soil anchor walls? They don't require as much excavation and filling as the MSE or Criblock walls.

Isn't there supposed to be a block for retaining walls that don't require filling with concrete? Might be bestcrete...

The different options that will work need to be looked at from the angle of fitness for purpose and cost. A solid concrete wall with steel reinforcement may cost less overall than another of those systems mentioned above.

Also, a retaining wall can move with the land movement if the piles and other design structures are not carefully considered or taken for granted.

I'll have to do some research on the soil anchor walls. One of my engineers sent me a BoQ for the construction of the MSE walls so I'll coompare the cost per meter of them. I've got 910metres of wall to do and I'm leaning towards the MSE once the comparison is in its favor over the rc wall.

The criblock is pretty popular in trini but the face members starts to crack after time. Plus as far as I know, MSE's never been done on a school before so it would be a pretty cool achievement for my young career.

bumping this post. It's been a while and my situation has not improved.

Can anyone recommend a good contractor or structural engineer for a site visit?

That is know locally and internationally as the Alan Block , not sure of the application as functional retaining wall or what stress or weight its designed for .

A better suited person for this type of job is a Geotechnical engineer. Structural engineers are generally clueless with anything that involves soil mechanics. EISL is one the best company that can help you.

You can also look at alternative designs for the retaining wall using Geosynthetics materials such as geo-net/geo-grid. Cost a lot less but you'll need a competent Geotetechnical or civil engineer to help with the design calculations.

Anyone know any other professionals who can do a site visit?

I've listened to and appreciate everyone's advice but i really want to have a professional look at it and provide some guidance. EISL is one option. Any others?

Anyone know any builders that can give an estimate for building a retaining wall with the measurements of 80 ft by 45 ft (the wall would be L shaped) and a height of 5ft. I already got a quote from a contractor but his quote was overly excessive and as such I was wondering if there was anyone here who does this kind of work reasonably. The location is in South and close to Princes Town. If you know anyone please pm me their contact info and I will contact them.

^^^^ depends on soil type, how deep you have to pile, location, and its purpose. Send me a pm and we can organize.

Bump...

Need a professional company to do a retaining wall to hold back a road reserve behind my home and build a fence on top of said wall. I see that Earth Investigation Systems Limited (EISL) was recommended above. Any other?

Thanks.

They specialise in that type of work.
