Trinidad Guardian wrote:A 46-foot skater catamaran named Monster got to the shores of Scarborough, Tobago in a time of one hour and 20 minutes to win the 45th annual Carib Great Race yesterday morning and dethroned two-time champion Fire One. At approximately 8 am, 28 boats began their journey to the sister isle from the Mucurapo Foreshore. Monster, competing in the A Class (130 mph) category, braved the rough waters to finish two minutes ahead of 17-time champion Mr Solo, while Fire One driven by Guy Acosta, had to settle for third position in 1:24. As a result of Monster’s victory, Mr Solo remains the only boat to win the Great Race three years in a row.
The Monster team, which includes Joey Sabeeny (driver), Alfred Bell (navigator), Daniel Peake (navigator), Peter Peake (throttleman) and Marcel Carrington (crew chief) were happy with the victory. “Ecstatic, it is a fantastic feeling, the hard work payed off,” navigator Bell said after the race describing the success of Monster. Bell also stated they fixed the problem of a faulty drive shaft, that caused Monster to shut down in last year’s race. “We had an unbalanced drive shaft, but we resolved that for this year,” Bell explained. Bell also mentioned that they did not have any mechanical problems during the race, but the sea was a major challenge, saying: “The water was very rough, it was harsh.” He paid tribute to driver Sabeeny and navigator Daniel Peake for getting them through the coarse waters. Bell stated most of the waves were four or five feet, and even got as high as eight or nine feet at times.
Costa mentioned on Friday that he was hoping all the boats will get to Tobago. “We hope to have all boats finish which will be a big achievement,” he stated. However, like last year, many of the entrants failed to complete the challenging course. Of the 28 boats registered to compete, 11 did not finish, one boat did not start and 16 finished the race. Last year, 10 of the 22 boats did not finish. In the B Class (120 mph), Boom Shaka Laka took home the top spot, finishing fourth overall in a time of 1:30. Boom Shaka Laka’s lone competitor in the Class, Stampede, could not complete the rough course. Global Warmer won the C Class (110 mph), stopping the clock at 1:38, ahead of Intense 111, that failed to finish. The participants in the D Class (95 mph) performed admirably, as four of the five starters completed the race. Stinging Metal finished in 1:41, narrowly ahead of Rush (1:43). The other winners on the day were Heat Wave (E Class, 80 mph), Energiza (F Class, 70 mph) and Pum Pum Conqueror (G Class, 60 mph).
