I have a general question regarding the manufacturer recommended oil viscosity.
According to the manual for a 2008 WRX, isn't the recommended oil 5W-30???

Anyone with a local version, (with a manual in English...LOL), can confirm?

I tried searching but alot of generalised speculation popped up...

Might be, but a lot of people tend to burn the lighter oil for some reason, so they switch to heavier.

Good idea is to always run the lightest you can without burning too much.

Pirate, its a good idea to try 10-40 oil.. see if that works for you..

as long as your engine is in good condition, that should be great

Why would u recommend him to use such a THIN oil as 10-30?

its a used, boosted vehicle.. that oil would disappear in no time..

Thing you hadda keep in mind I think, is that its a subaru... horizontal engine... NEED oil pressure, plus having a thin oil like that, if you wanna risk it burning out, then youre gonna experience king subaru number 1 problem.. (spun bearing)

So just becareful when using an oil such as 10-30...

but if the 10-40 is working, why change it?

i dont believe in anything 10 and under in our country/weather....im going to give the scheaffers a try next oil change, just to check oil pressure and consumption and engine noise level.

I myself am going to start using this oil

I was a strong amsoil person before, but I've heard from persons using amsoil for a extremely long time that the scheaf actually works alot better....

I think i'd go with the standard 20-50 oil though.

I notice they also have a gearoil, I was wondering if 2 try that, however only a fews ago i changed my gearoil so might leave that for the hour.

Plz don't fall for those gimmick bearing tests. Check this http://youtu.be/Ne7ayhPVVYY

One of the best oil resources out there is bobistheoilguy

Do your research and make your decision in an informed manner

yea i noticed one person guiding customers accordingly with these oil bearing tests and which failed etc....just ignored it and asking around who used what and what works good for along time

Currently I have this MAX LIFE oil in my engine, but that will be coming out this weekend to change with the schiefers or however u spell that oil.. i'd be able to see the changes, and i'd know if what they say is true.

Thus far, i've heard from a reliable person that after switching from amsoil to this, their engine actually runs alot better...

How could you tell it's running better? Only way to truly tell is to have a UOA performed on each batch of oil

Well I guess thats one opinion..

I had a honda before, I used OIL A and my car sounded a certain way, as well as the oil pressure and temp was different from when I used OIL B... Oil B being the genuine honda oil... My engine was actually alot quieter on startup..

So its not going to be a comprehensive report of your engines performance, but after driving a car everyday and being aware of its readings (oil temp, oil pressure etc) it will give a fair estimation of if the oil is working better for you. Also the consumption of the oil, if your engine is burning that specific oil, then I guess it would also say that this oil, isnt the correct one for me..

BTW I used castrol on one of my previous cars, broke 4 of the same engines.... switched to amsoil, never broke another.... same exact tune, same type gas, same boost.... So i guess that would have been a hint atleast then... or maybe it was just luck, but based on factors that I can examine, I would say the oil may have had a slight impact on that.

Well like I say, nothing beats good hard research.
No 2 engines are the same. Things you should consider are age, build materials, normal operating temps and pressures, boosted or NA, driving conditions etc etc ad infinitum. Some oils are better at some things than other, once you reach the premium brands, there is no rule that says Schaeffers is better than amsoil which is better that RP and so on and so forth

ahhhh yes, someones on track....oil temp, oil pressure and sound of engine.

I did this one my skyline i had, and i tried mobil 1, amsoil racing oil, castrol and redline....out of all, redline gave me lower oil pressure, slightly higher oil temp. Amsoil had my engine noisy as well. Castrol and Mobil1 kept the engine quiet, smooth and good oil temp and higher oil pressure than the rest. However, castrol lasted longer in terms of consumption.

But with that being said, what will good hard long research say?
At the end of the day, research based on reviews can be bias, we wont know...

plus it wont do much based on that logic you just provided... since no two engines are the same due to variables.. so therefore it boils down to what I said before, which is.. you would know what works best for you...

Its dependant on what you're looking for from your oil...and thats it basically... i've never used schaeffers so i'm going to try it.. i've HEARD its a pretty good oil, and better than amsoil.. based on usage of these two in the same engine.. judged by oil pressure & temperature....

Ahhhh....

digging up this damn thing again....but...

The spec is calling for a API SN/GF-5 rated (Resource Conserving) oil.
The problem is that when I am doing a search on products from different manufacturers, Shell, M1, Amsoil etc... they only have 5W-30 or 5W-40 oils that meet this spec...

:?: :?: :?:

You wont get a 50 body oil with a GF5 rating. Its just not possible.
So... follow the spec in your owners manual.

50 and 60 body oil really should be avoided in most cars... They are very viscous and reduce the flow rate in small passages, such as in a turbo. Since the oil helps in cooling these parts, it doesn't cool effectively, leading to premature failure. It also causes premature degradation of the oil, as the slower flowing oil now cooks for a longer period.

^^ Hmm understood... Previously in my other car (boosted) I used Amsoil 10W40... but then switched to schaeffer in my subie (boosted) but 20W50, because that is what was recommended..

I know there are 5W50 in schaeffer's ..never seen or noticed a 10W40

Now you have me wondering, if 2 switch back to something with 10 40
