Adam Lanza - the young man suspected of gunning down 20 primary school children in the US - was a gifted student who lived with his mother in a wealthy neighbourhood in Newtown, Connecticut.

The slim 20-year-old had an "alternative style", was "very remote" and was "one of the goths", according to reports.

Described as being "somewhat autistic" by his brother, Lanza is said to have killed his mother Nancy, a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary, before going to the school and shooting the head teacher, five other adults, and 20 pupils, before turning the gun on himself.

Lanza attended Newtown High School, and local newspaper clippings mention his name among the school's honour roll students.

A member of the school's technology club, he would meet up with fellow members for "LAN parties" - short for Local Area Network - at which the pals would hook up their computers and play games with each other.

One former friend described Lanza as generally happy, very clever and "probably a genius".

Joshua Milas, who graduated from Newtown High School in 2009, said he had not seen Lanza in a few years.

"We would hang out, and he was a good kid," he told Sky News. "He was smart. Probably one of the smartest kids I know. He was probably a genius."

In Newtown, which has a population of 27,000, and is about 60 miles north east of New York City, investigators are currently trying to piece together a picture of Lanza - but so far no motive has been found for the shooting.

His parents filed for divorce in 2008, and his father, Peter, who lives in Stamford, Connecticut, reportedly works as a tax director for General Electric.

The brothers' aunt Marsha Lanza said her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it.

The aunt said she was close with Nancy and sent her a Facebook message on Friday morning asking how she was doing - but she never responded.

She described Nancy Lanza as a good mother and kind-hearted. If her son had needed counselling, "Nancy wasn't one to deny reality," she told Sky News.

She added that her husband had seen suspected killer Adam as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary about him.

Following a candlelit vigil, held last night local resident Catherine Urso said her son knew the suspect.

"He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the goths," she said.

Lanza's 24-year-old brother Ryan reportedly told police he believed his brother suffered from a personality disorder.

This photo really speaks volumes as to what the families of the victims are going through. Innocent kids killed, for what, no one knows.

Morgan Freeman on Adam Lanza

Yesterday’s shooting was beyond tragic words alone cannot convey the sympathy and horror felt due to the event. Across Facebook people have been posting frantically about gun control and placing the blame on the fact God has been taken out of school.

This examiner happened to stumble across the words of Morgan Freeman and his thoughts on the event on Friday as well as other mass shootings.

Morgan Freeman:

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine?

Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

Freeman’s words give pause for thought and reflection. I pose this question to the reader: What do you think? Are people seeking attention and notoriety because of the way the media portrays them? People who commit suicide often feel like they are alone and a nobody. In this case did Lanza decide he wanted to go down in history books by making his name synonymous with monstrosity?

I’m not sure we will ever truly know why the events unfolded the way they did. Let’s take Freeman’s advice and remember the names of the children we lost.

This is Victoria. She died a hero today. She hid her first graders in the cabinets and closets after hearing the gunfire. When the shooter came to her classroom, she told him that her students were in the gym. He then gunned her down and moved on. She saved the lives of all of her students. She deserves to be remembered for her bravery.

I'm sure you all have seen the woman on the top picture all over. The woman in the top photo is Carlee Soto, waiting to hear news about her sister, a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary.

The woman in the second photo is Victoria Soto, Carlee's sister. Soto was apparently pushing the children into a closet when she was confronted by Lanza. She put herself between the gunman and the children and that’s when she was tragically shot and killed. When she became aware there was a gunman in the school, she hid her first-graders in closets and cabinets, then told the shooter they were in the gym. He turned the gun on Soto, killing her, but none of her students were harmed.

You are a hero Victoria, and no one will ever forget the amazing thing you did for your students. Only the good die young, may you rest in peace. Such a beautiful soul.
