olton wrote: Police used their private cars as bait for thieves who were hooked at the end of a big police investigation into the theft of cars in and around the Gulf City Shopping Complex in La Romaine.
Two thieves who saw an unlocked car with a window down jumped in and drove away.
The car belonged to a police officer who was undercover nearby and the thieves were held within minutes.
The sting was spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner of Police Phillip Carmona, who said he was concerned about the spate of car thefts in the Southern Division.
A ten-man team of officers spent six weeks undercover at the shopping mall, until they made the breakthrough last Friday.
Police found several Nissan Sunnys, Nissan B12s, a Mazda 626 and a Toyota station wagon.
The suspects were held at garages and homes at Lowkie Trace, Penal; Enterprise, Chaguanas; Carlsen Field; Caparo; Caroni Savannah Road and Quinam Road, Morne Diablo.
Detectives Phillip, Levia and Maynard led the sting operation.
