Battle for Avdiivka: Ukrainian Command Surrenders the City
Situation as of 05:00, February 17, 2024

Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Alexander Syrsky, announced that the decision to leave Avdiivka was made by the Ukrainian command in order to protect the lives of Ukrainian military personnel and to secure more advantageous defense positions.

▪️ The Ukrainian troops of the "Tavria" group announced that they have already withdrawn from Avdiivka. However, this is not entirely accurate as there are still pockets of resistance remaining in the city. Additionally, numerous AFU groups have lost contact and control, so they may not even be aware of the decision to withdraw.

▪️ The disorganized retreat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with losses, took place through the fields towards Lastochkino along the Durnaya Gully and the surrounding area. The approaches to Lastochkino and the exit from the gully were mined by the Russian "Agriculture" system on February 15, making it possible to leave only through the bodies of Ukrainian military personnel.

▪️ As night fell, Russian troops launched an assault on a reinforced concrete plant in the city center and continued their advance.

▪️ It is unlikely that they will abandon the Avdeevka Coke Plant or retreat beyond Lastochkino. The Ukrainian forces had enough time to prepare reserve positions.

▪️ If the Ukrainian Armed Forces hold on to AKHZ, Lieutenant General Andrei Mordvichev, the operation's commander, will most likely decide to bypass it and starve them out. This situation is similar to what happened with the Ilyich Plant and Azovstal in Mariupol, where a similar decision was made.

Clearing the city will take at least several days, as it is necessary to demine and thoroughly inspect residential areas.

The main priority is to maintain momentum and prevent the disorganized and uncontrollable enemy from regrouping and establishing a stable defense.

Not 'pockets of resistance'... They are men that have been abandoned and no attempts will be made to extract them.

The casualty numbers mirror a declassified U.S. intelligence assessment that was first shared with Congress in December.

This is smash heroes!!

Dead Ukrainian soldiers in the streets of Avdivka with their hands bound behind their backs.

This is why with or without Western help Ukraine will continue to fight Russia.

The west had two freaking years to arm them properly instead of taking a year to deliver 30 tanks and still no F16s?

2 years????
The Ukraine army was being trained to fight Russia specifically since 2014... It was the. Best trained and supplied that nato had to offer.
The eu minsk agreement with russia was just a stall tactic to placate Russia and prep Ukraine for Russia. Angela merkel admitted minsk was a stall tactic.

The sad thing is, Russia coudl have lost to Ukraine when Wagner was fighting in Bakhmut.

When pregozhin wss was saying he wasn't getting weapons or munitions, is cause Russia didn't have it to give.

Russia didn't have the industry and even the economy to support the push at that time.
That is why putin was vex that pregozhin pushed forward.

It forced putin to push hard for the trade deals to circumvent the EFFECTIVE sanctions, and the arms deals and ramp up of the war industry.
And now they are full steam ahead.

Before all that, and because of that, if elenski had gotten the tanks and f16 he had asked for, early when he had asked for it, he would have won...

Ukraine resistance forced Russia to be on their a game now.
And biden pussyfooting with arming Ukraine forced them to loose against a weak Russia.

All elenski had to do was stop bombing the donbas. But no, he had to be doing the bidding of Victoria newland to provoke Russia... So stupid Ukrainians dying for a lost American cause

All Israel need to do, all Ukraine need to do.

It's almost as if there is not a second party in all the wars you cheerlead on.

Watching some videos of Avdiivka from X and telegram.

Holy firetruck, the amount of dead Russians and Ukrainians lost in this battle. Talking thousands if not tens of thousands on both sides.

UAF totally muddled this though, they should have given up weeks ago. Russian slaughtered so many Ukrainians in this last week as they were cut off.

Seems like this is what Valerii Zaluzhnyi was fired over, he reportedly wanted to order a retret on Avdiivka.

Almost feels like the west wanted Avdiivka to be a disaster to blame the GOP and Trump for blocking funding.

Again, the west playing with Ukrainian lives.

Yep. After a Russian invasion in 2014 along with the Ukrainian Revolution for Dignity to oust the elected president of Ukraine and restore the Ukrainian Constitution that same year, vthe Ukrainian population will now just roll over and take it.

Ukraine is fighting this war using Soviet doctrine i.e. throw unlimited men and armour forward. However have less of everything as compared to Russia.

They need to reevaluate how they fight especially if aid is being reduced.

Started watching the Nalavny documentary on HBO. It appeared under the recommendations on the home page I guess to piggyback on his death.

An hour in so far and it seems balanced. Doesn't hide his ties to the far right in Russia. I'm at the point where he and Bellingcat were trolling the agents that attempted his assassination attempt in Tomsk (the Novichok poisoning attempt).

Real balls on that guy though. He always knew his remaining lifespan was in Putin's hands.

Following hostilities with Russia in 2014, Ukraine increased the size of its armed forces. The West provided training and arms to Ukraine since 2014. Almost ten years of arms shipment, not enough tanks and F16s.

Arms sales and donations prior to the invasion were always small I guess to not piss Putin off. Also Ukraine's army at the time would have been solely Soviet era equipment not compatible with Western stocks.

The US's overall defense sales and donations to Ukraine pre Feb 2022 was something like US$2.4b which was Arms and Training combined. That is real small change to a nation of 45m ppl who were invaded by the world's 2nd superpower
Arms Sales b/t 2015 - 2020 by the US to Ukraine was a measly US$277M mostly Javelins.

Still doesn't absolve the US and EU arming Ukraine as slow as molasses though.

The west is downplaying it now, but UAF are panicking and Russia is only getting stronger.

What's the likely result now?

A frozen conflict with Russia occupying what they have now and Ukraine conducting hit and run raids.

It's a stalemate as long as Ukraine's army doesn't collapse, if they feel defending against Russia is an evitable death sentence, then why fight a losing battle against an opponent who is seemingly getting their act together now.

Russia doesn't want Ukraine.
It has its first objective.
The rest is demilitarization and de nazification.

But, putin had said in his oration that Ukraine state was a Soviet invention and is made up of lands carved out from other countries.
If other countries want to reclaim, its up to them.

And Odessa is russisn, even kiev.

Ukraine needs to negotiate, and stop being a useful idiot for the west.

Its the same logical fallacies..
Trains and arms ISIS to fight Syria.
Trains and arms Ukraine to fight Russia.
Trains and arms Taiwan to fight China.
US of A using the same playbook and expecting different results.

US and the EU had 2 years to deliver more munitions and equivalent to Ukraine. They send 'just enough', despite parroting that it's best bang for buck ever and that it was all old stock piles.

Ukraine has been short on equipment for months.

Russia is ramping up, despite there significant losses they're roughly the same size army, if not bigger than before.

That's a worrying proposition and you see the EU only now reacting to it.

It's almost too late.

Russia won't stop now, they can't stop now having invested and moving to a way economy (hard train to stop).
