^ opitcal is better than analog RCA, however if you want HD Audio (as I'm sure he wil want while watching 3D movies) then definitely you will need HDMI.

You've got some really nice brands there which would sound great with an analog source in stereo or 2.1 as you probably have it setup. So no need for HDMI in your case.

however if you want to enjoy Dolby TrueHD or dtsHD Master Audio (almost all bluray movies use one of these two audio formats) or even a SACD (high dynamic range super audio CD) in your PS3, then you will need HDMI and a compatible receiver.

Another pair of RTi6 Polks (as surrounds), a Polk CS10 Center Channel speaker and a decent (US$300) 5.1 HDMI receiver and you have everything you need.

it'll be a big jump for me to go >2.1 wrt to surround / centre speakers + reciever + cables +space + WAF

i'll tinker around with what i've got to try to get the best out of it till the bug bites.......

looking at DACs on the market right now....might give one a try....

^ if you plan to stay at 2.1 then I dont think you need anything else

really the HDMI for audio is for people who want 5.1 and 7.1 on bluray and bluray 3D movies.
If you want to get the best out of bluray and bluray 3D then you will want to hear it in the format the disc is in and thats where a good receiver that supports HD audio comes in, otherwise you are just getting HD visuals but non-HD audio - which is a waste IMO

yup and the tweeters of your front speakers should be at the level of your ears when you are sitting and the surround and back speakers should be at the level of your ears when you are standing.

just a general rule of thumb for 5.1 and 7.1 setups

its sorta high to say about 4.5ft to bottom of tv avg

put it there since its in the middle of the living room for everyone and visible to the people in the kitchen etc. its slightly angled for 3D when sitting down on the couch.. just proper audio now :\
checking out some receivers with 3D pass through

that's to high meng - IMO anyway

watching a 2 hour movie from the couch will cause nuff neck strain as you have to be watching up.

but if that works best for you and ppl in the kitchen...

if you dont have space at the back of ur sofa to put the surrounds, can they be mounted higher to the ceiling facing downwards? because the sofa pretty much jams the wall to the back

^ of course!

there are speakers made for this
Image Image

just mount it in the ceiling above your head on either side of the room

remember that in a 5.1 setup the surrounds should be at the side of you and not behind you.
Only in 7.1 do the rear surrounds go behind you

7.1 setup

Anyone knows where can I get the Monster Power centre locally? This is for a very basic setup so I dont want to stretch the budget with a HTS 1000 - the HTS 950 or lower/equivalent will work.

the best thing to do is to buy a video card with HDMI or DVI out - they are not very expensive
http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Expr ... 004BQKQ8A/

it wont look very good if you try to convert VGA to HDMI, even using an upscaler and the upscaler might cost as much as a the video card, or even more!

duane, i know you mentioned this before but i dont have time to search; where did you get the door hinges and the front shocks?
also, how did you design the fans to operate? do you have to switch them on each time you use the components???

the holes are to pass the cables and there is cable management behind the vertical pillar.
you could also run the cables inside the pillar to hide them better.

the hinges are standard concealed hinges, the "shocks" are called "lid stays" and I use them for soft open and close, I got from Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Sugatsune-Stay-De ... 0006L39BK/

the fans are normal 120mm PC fans that I spliced to standard USB cables. I plug the USB cable in to the PS3 and the receiver so when they come on and off so do the fans.

this is my setup

WRT the cooling, if you not up for splicing or giving up USB slots, search "coolerguys" or "cabcool" on Amazon for lots of ready to install cooling kits from 1x80mm to 3x120mm kits. I have mines hooked up to a programmable thermal controller.

Heres a pic of my 2x80mm and 2x120mm just after installation
