i would think that you can hit back with your hands in defense. however picking up a weapon seems like a no no unless there is further provocation or threat (i'm not a lawyer).

POLICE investigating the brutal chopping murder of 18-year-old Toco Composite School student Peter Richard say that they are preparing a file to be sent to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard, as they seek guidance on whether or not to charge a 23-year- old suspect for the murder.

Richard, a Form Six student was fatally chopped following a football game at the Toco recreation ground on Tuesday. The suspect is said to have confronted Richard over a bad tackle during the game. The suspect later chopped Richard and sought the protection of officers at the Toco Police Station when he was chased by villagers.
