yo,

I bought the
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens

last month, used it for the 1st time last week to cover a corporate thing at work. thought i is a quick lens and did well at portraits

but i thought i was a serious macro (not sure if i using the right term) wrt to close ups to get the real fine stuff.

maybe i going about it wrong.

also got the Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras, played with it twice, once in the day and one at night, I thought when i used it with normal lighting and playing with the angle, i saw the softness of the pics opposed to a kind of glare on the subject.

however in areas of little light, i found that at a distance of 5-6 feet the subjects were not as clear as i thought it would be

Nah its not a macro lens - maybe with extension tubes... Shooting with primes is a different kinda shooting tho eh?

The Magnification is 1:6 on that lens you should be at 1:1 for Macro work

The 50mm f1.8 isn't a macro lens, however because of its incredible sharpness for the price, you can crop in tight on an image and still maintain very good detail. I probably wouldn't recommend it for shooting a corporate even unless you're familiar with it. a zoom lens would be much more convenient. Also bear in mind that with increased "speed" larger apertures, comes reduced depth of field, so don't go shooting people at 1/500 @ f1.8 jus because you have a fast lens, cos they'll come out with "soft" ears or noses. 1/80 to 1/125 sec is suitable shutter speed for freezing social movement.

As for the flash, you need to read the book and determine which mode you were using. ETTL is dependable and works for most things.
Beside the book, you could also check this out: www.shootsmarter.com

Being limited to F3.5 @18mm was not helping at all. I yearned for a 'faster' lens but the 40,40x and 60 don't have the lens servo in the body. They are only auto-focus with the AF-S lenses. Sucks. So a decent F1.8 HSM or AFS was over 550 new. For the extra cash you might as well get a nice D80 which shares all the sensors with the D3.

ok so Nikon launched their 35mm F1.8 a few weeks ago. I've been calling around since then and only today did the ever extending arm of the recession reach out and touch me. Even the big suppliers here said that because of shipping cut backs that some of the lines out of Japa have ceased all together. Fortunately one place got just a few in this morning and I snagged one up very quickly.
I've never shot with a prime lens before so I was excited and cautious. The going price is 275 CAD plus taxes.

first impressions, wow I love their Gold boxes and 5 year warranty.
Image

it comes with all documentation and warranties as well as a HB hood and microfibre purse.
Look at the aperture ..wow. Let there be light!!

I was late for work so just took 3 shots out of the box.

I'm really impressed, maybe it's the novelty. You have so much more focus control. There are two modes on teh lens itself. A/M - auto focus or grab the ring and focus manually and then M- full manual focus.
Just playing around with it.
