The answer is determined by the person asking the question....

It's all a matter of interpretation...it can swing either way based on your argument.

it's actually not open to interpretation. there is one correct answer and that is 288

I now realize that the answer is 2

Simply because the equation really means, 48÷......2(9+3)

The brackets need to be expanded.

2(9+3) = 2x9+2x3

= 24

The equation will then be ....48÷24

. . The answer is 2 :D

You decide that on your own?
The brackets need to be expanded. Why? Leave the equation as it is.

2(9+3) = 2x9+2x3

= 24

The equation will then be ....48÷24

. . The answer is 2 :D

If you use strict mathematical rules the answer is 288, if you try to make sense of the equation because of the fact that the order of operation is confusing it will cause you to get 2 which is erroneous because it would entail either adding brackets or multiplying before dividing which is wrong.

soooo it would be 24(9+3) which is 216 + 72 to give 288???

Technically yeah.

Supposed to get 48÷2x12 (after working out brackets)
24x12 =288
