Caribbean Airlines (CAL) has signed an interline deal with the world's largest international airline-Emirates, which promises to make it easier for customers to travel the world.
The agreement is expected to be fully rolled out in the coming weeks, CAL stated in a press release yesterday.
According CAL, the arrangement gives customers greater choice of destinations, easy transfers in key airports such as London's Gatwick and New York JFK.
Customers can also take advantage of through fares from Emirates' extensive network via London and New York to Port of Spain, Georgetown, Kingston and Montego Bay.
?For example, a passenger travelling from Mumbai, India, can fly on one of Emirates six daily non-stop flights to their hub in Dubai, then connect to one of their three daily non-stop services to London Gatwick (including the 380's) and then connect to one of Caribbean Airline's four weekly non-stop flights to Port of Spain,? CAL explained.
The local airline's vice president of commercial and customer service George Reeleder said CAL expressed excitement at the CAL's move to expand its relationship with Emirates.
?Many people are unaware that Emirates carries more passengers to and from the Indian sub-continent than any other airline in the world, or that they fly to 19 cities on the African continent- all key markets for the Caribbean. Simpler transits and connections with more destination options will make it easier for our customers to travel the world,? he said.
CAL said it is looking forward to the opportunities that will become available through Emirates as the co-operative agreement unfolds.
CAL envisages that other markets will open up allowing passengers seamless transitions through some of the world's largest cities.

70,000 Tertiary students to benefit with MTEST Edu-ID Card
Friday, July 24, 2015
Seventy thousand students (70,000) within the tertiary education sector are set to benefit from discounts and rewards with the historic launch of the MTEST Edu-ID card which was administered by Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training on Wednesday July 22nd 2015 at the UTT O’Meara Campus, O’Meara, Lots #74 – 98, O’Meara Industrial Park, O’Meara, Arima. Speaking during the launch, Minister Karim outlined some of the benefits to students stating that there is a need to collect data, monitor and evaluate student participation in the sector, “We recognise that tertiary level students require assistance to gain access to products and services at reasonable costs in order to decrease the financial burden placed on them as they pursue their relevant course of studies or training. As a result, this card – the MTEST Edu-ID card, will only be issued to bonafide students of the tertiary education sector – to both part-time and full-time students.” Some of the merchants on board the initiative so far include Flow, TSTT, Digicel, Microsoft Trinidad and Tobago and Unicomer (Courts). He said that one of the reasons for his involvement in such a card was to ensure that the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training can account for every single student who is involved in the tertiary education sector at the academic or vocational level and because it is the very first identity card to be used in any CARICOM region.
The card will seek to further improve the accuracy and efficiency of enrolment queries, produce data analysis to aid in policy decision-making and will be used as an identifier to all nationals and non-nationals to track the programmes they are registered at the tertiary learning institutions. He said, “Our vision therefore is to provide a unified system to allow the unique identification of students within the tertiary level across all TLI’s, who will benefit from a downstream of services offered by the Ministry and its subsidiary agencies.” Minister Karim said the University of Trinidad and Tobago was used as the pilot because not only is it the country’s national university, but it was fulfilling the needs of the industry and national development priorities.
He also said that the Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses (GATE) programme will not be stopped but further expanded and secured, “It is envisioned that in the next six years, the GATE programme will fund 100% tuition for select postgraduate programmes based on the socio-economic priority and institute a policy of ‘no repeats’ for all GATE approved programmes at all approved tertiary institutions, and ensure that students who receive GATE funding serve their contractual obligations on completion of their programmes of study at both public and private entities among other initiatives.” In the coming days, Minister Karim said the National Training Agency would be hosting its very first National Youth Fair on Wednesday August 12th to Sunday August 16th at the new MTEST Administrative Complex, situated at Narsaloo Ramaya Marg Road, Chaguanas. He said the initiative will draw thousands of students who have completed their examination at the secondary, post-secondary or tertiary level and would incorporate much-needed downtime whilst incorporating parents, children and families. The event, he said, will have village themes such as a Gaming Village, An Education Village, a Community Village

OPEN DURING HOLIDAYS: Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh, left, former Moruga/Tableland MP Clifton de Coteau, centre, and school principal Hamzad Ho...
RESULTS of the 2015 Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) and Caribbean Advanced Examination Proficiency (CAPE) are expected to be handed over to the Ministry of Education on Sunday.
This was revealed yesterday by Minister of Education Dr Tim Gopeesingh who spoke to reporters shortly after delivering the feature address at the formal opening of the spanking new $17 million New Grant Government Primary School, located at the corner of Naparima Mayaro Road and Hindustan Junction in Princes Town.
Gopeesingh said the results will be uploaded shortly so that students who are anxiously awaiting the results can access the info online. He however could not give a definite date.
“I know it will go online but I am not sure when as I am still to be informed by the registrar,” Dr Gopeesingh told reporters. “I was however told last week Friday that the results will be coming on August 9.” Also questioned about the non-publication of the names of the top 200 students in the 2015 Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) examinations, Gopeesingh said there were no valid reasons why, up to now, the list of names has not yet been published.
“When I go back to the ministry, I will instruct them to do the publication,” he added as he said there were two schools of thought as to whether or not the names of the top 200 should be made public.
“Some believe that we shouldn’t (publish) while others feel we should. But we have been doing it for the last four years and I don’t think that I will change my course...we will publish it.” Yesterday, scores of young boys and girls dressed in their crisp school uniform, joined Principal Hamzad Hosein and members of the school staff to witness Gopeesingh along with Clifton De Coteau, immediate former Member of Parliament for Moruga/Tableland, cut the ribbon and also unveiled the cornerstone of their brand new school.
The multi-million dollar building construction of which began under the People’s Partnership Government was completed in April, De Coteau informed his audience as he explained to them that the completion of the institution was a “new grant” on education in the community.
He hoped that with the new building, the school’s population increases from the current 175 to the maximum of 240.
Education Minister Gopeesingh in his address said that education has been on his Government’s front burner and during the last five years, millions of dollars have been spent on the construction and repair of several schools across the country.
A number of new primary schools and early childhood care and education (ECCE) centres were built throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
“We spent $14 million over the last five years to do 113 repair projects in your schools in this constituency. We also repaired three ECCE centres and two secondary schools and that is because every school is important in this constituency and in Trinidad and Tobago,” Minister Gopeesingh said.
Saying that a total of $150 million was spent on security, $50 million on school transport and $120 million in janitorial services annually, Gopeesingh said he has instructed all secondary school principals that when school reopens in September, they must take $50,000 from their annual budget which in some cases range from $.7 million to as much as $2 million, to keep their surroundings clean and paint the walls.
Gopeesingh said he no longer wanted to see graffiti on toilet walls in schools. He said paint must be given to MTS workers to paint the walls.
