BANGKOK (AP) — Several countries around Asia and the Pacific that are experiencing their first major surges of the coronavirus rushed to impose tough restrictions, a year and a half into a pandemic that many initially weathered well.
Faced with rapidly rising numbers of infections in recent months, authorities in such countries as Thailand, South Korea and Vietnam announced or imposed measures Friday that they hope can slow the spread before health care systems are overwhelmed.
It’s a rhythm familiar in much of the world, where repeated surges deluged hospitals and led to high numbers of deaths. But many Asian countries avoided that cycle by imposing stiff travel restrictions combined with tough measures at home.
Now some are seeing record numbers of new cases and even deaths, blamed in part on the highly contagious delta variant combined with low rates of vaccination and decisions to ease restrictions that have hit economies hard. Though overall numbers are nowhere yet near those seen during outbreaks in hotspots in Europe and the United States, the rapid rise set off alarm bells just as many Western countries with high vaccine rates began to breathe a sigh of relief.

Via the BBC.com Covid: Woman aged 90 died with double variant infection

It is possible to catch two Covid variants at the same time, experts are warning after seeing a double infection in a 90-year-old woman who became sick with the Alpha and Beta types first identified in the UK and South Africa.

The woman, who died in March 2021 in Belgium, had not been vaccinated.

Her doctors suspect she contracted the infections from two different people.

They believe it is the first documented case of its kind and, although rare, similar dual infections are happening.

Her case is being discussed at this year's European Congress on Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases.

In January 2021, scientists in Brazil reported that two people had been simultaneously infected with two types of coronavirus, one of them a variant of concern called Gamma.

Researchers from Portugal, meanwhile, recently treated a 17-year-old who appeared to have caught a second type of Covid while still recovering from a different, pre-existing Covid infection.

The 90-year-old, who was infected with the two "variants of concern" - the most worrying new versions of coronavirus that experts are tracking - had been admitted to hospital after experiencing some falls, but later developed worsening respiratory symptoms.

Bonded courier direct from the manufacturer to the national organization is what's being done now.

How does that work when the manufacturer doesn't have a private distribution channel because there is a worldwide vaccine shortage?

I have been hearing and seen whatspp messages of very concerning practices in employment in Trinidad.

1) using the pandemic as an excuse to restructure even though their revenue has not been affected.
2) active withholding of infection cases from follow employees.
3) union busting activities at several ministries.
4) encouragement of breaking social distancing rules at work places.
5) encouragement of hiring venes to fill positions on rotation and pushing out existing workers.

Even in the midst of a pandemic, greedy employers and ministries trying to screw the workforce.

I hope we get all the variants. We deserve no less

interesting experiment going on rn in Wimbledon (World's biggest Tennis tournament). About 12,000 people stewing in the crowd for a few hours (100% capacity), many (most?) are not wearing masks.

We know a population dosed with mRNA vaccines can handle that stress test (NBA Finals on now as well) but this is the first big test for a population with a large percentage of AZ vaccines in a Delta-heavy region.

You can say it until the cows come home. Some ppl still believe that there are covid-19 vaccines waiting on a shelf abroad for somebody to buy them. And all T&T has to do is try harder or allow the private sector to buy them.

Statements like that show their depth in the issue.

This is exactly what Master Keith wants.

Timing is on the point.

Now all he needs is to wait and see what is the result of the upcoming ease of restrictions.

Its very simple. If cases and deaths spike again….blame it on the irresponsibility of Trinis.

if u watch the graphs, u would see the new cases are trending steady now. before it was trending down, now looks to be leveling off. and u have to wait a week again to see how it goes, but i thinking its curving back upwards.

u got a small bump with the vaccine drive. this change in trend is due to the SEA, and it turning sharply. the 15th will be the two week mark, but give it a week from now to see if it really is change, as the public stats are delayed from the actual samples gathered.

the bad thing about that is, when we see a change in the public figures, they woudl be seeing that at least a 5 days earlier. and thats why i say, they looked to open back so much ting saturday.. hadda take front.

Barbados is once again leading from the front. Early lockdowns are the key, but Habit7 will never admit PNM lapsed big time.

Govt logic as I said before

Covid now start: "no cases" in trinidad- lock it down hard!

Over 150 cases per day, deadliest variant around: open it up...then blame trinis...hope sinopharm works

Wednesday the week average was down at 162 cases, as of yesterday it's up to 191 so definitely increasing. Hopefully it doesn't go up further but with things being eased it's unlikely.

I also hope the new therapeutic drug they started to treat people with at least reduces the deaths.

Deaths in Barbados = 48

Deaths in T&T = 937

The social and logical response should be to vaccinate ( 800,000 vaccines due tomorrow ) then open .

UNION READY TO DEFEND WORKERS FORCED TO TAKE VACCINES-DUKE
TT GUARDIAN

12.July.21

Watson Duke, president of the National Trade Union Centre of Trinidad and Tobago (NATUC) is calling on employers, to stop using the Government’s “Vaccinate to Operate,” policy to violate the human rights of workers.

Duke made the call during an interview with Guardian Media, in which he was responding to Prestige Holdings’ “KFC workers must be vaccinated to return to work stance.”

Duke who also heads the Public Services Association (PSA), said while NATUC and the PSA understood the trend of the world in the use of vaccines to prevent death and slow the spread of COVID-19, it also understood the right of all human beings to accept or reject anything that goes into their body.

Responding to Guardian Media’s question on the advice he would give to the membership of the PSA, should they face a similar challenge, Duke related, “If they are so threatened or compelled by the employer take the COVID-19 vaccine…any one of those vaccines, please report it to the PSA immediately. We are going to deal with it in the court of law.”

Duke swore, “The PSA stands ready and willing to defend, any single worker in this country and so does NATUC. We stand ready and willing to defend any worker in this country who is forced out of their job or denied entrance into a job because they have not been vaccinated.”

Meanwhile, attorney-at-law, Brian Baig who agreed with Duke, told lawyers and trade unions, “get ready to defend workers.”

Baig said this was not a fight against Government’s call to the population to be vaccinated, rather it was a matter of ensuring, people’s basic human rights were not being infringed upon.

He said, whatever the reason for an employee or any person is, for not wanting to take the vaccine that was his or her right.

“Taking the vaccine should be left up to them, it should not be made mandatory. Because these persons, you cannot tell as to whether, will they have any reactions to the vaccines, if they may have any health issues etc.”

He said while vaccines were always recommended, no one should be forced to take a vaccine and this would be very unfair of any employer to attempt to do so.

Baig said the guidelines about vaccination in the workplace, was made clear by the president of the Industrial Court Deborah Thomas-Felix who said in early June, an employer could not alter its terms and conditions to make the COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for employees.

“Unless government establishes laws that would make the COVID-19 vaccine compulsory, organisations cannot demand that their workers take the vaccine. What employers can do is encourage workers to be vaccinated,” Baig advised.

Old news...

Govt expands vaccination rollout to business, social sectors

Groups include Tobago, the Unemployment Relief and Community-Based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programmes, the prison population, public transport, agriculture, the Ministry of Education, and other ministries.

The supermarket, pharmacy, manufacturing, construction, and banking sectors will receive additional allocations of vaccines. The food and beverage sector, janitorial companies, tertiary institutions, religious leaders, funeral homes, the diabetes association and coalition on NCDs, as well as special groups such as the blind, deaf, and those with autism and cerebral palsy would also be allocated vaccines.

It's taken about 2 months to reach 140k persons fully vaccinated which is approx 10%.

That should include most of the elderly and those with NCDs.

At what % should we reopen?

sooo, a good protocol to implement is to allow vaccinated persons to enter WITHOUT mandatory quarantine, even tho they still catch and spread covid...
they doing that to mask the SEA spread too.

then u get ur spike then u lock down again.... mc
