Covid-19: Spike in cases in Chile is blamed on people mixing after first vaccine shot
BMJ 2021; 373 doi: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.n1023 (Published 20 April 2021) Cite this as: BMJ 2021;373:n1023
Cases of the novel coronavirus are surging in Chile despite the country having one of the most successful vaccine rollouts in the world.
Chile reported 7370 infections on 18 April, down slightly on the record high of 9151 cases reported on 9 April. Some 96% of the intensive care beds in the country are occupied as hospitals come under growing strain from the most severe coronavirus outbreak yet.1
The surge in cases comes despite a speedy vaccine rollout, a nationwide nightly curfew, and restrictions on movement imposed across most of the country. The case numbers have provoked concern and speculation around the world as to why the transmission rate remains high despite 40% of Chileans2 having received at least one vaccine dose—the third highest rate in the world after the UK and Israel.
...
Most vaccinated Chileans have only had a single dose, meaning they are still largely unprotected from infection. A study published by researchers at the University of Chile on 6 April, in which Cortés was not involved, found that the CoronaVac [Sinovac/Chinese] vaccine was 56.5% effective in preventing infections two weeks after a second dose but only 3% effective after a single dose.3 Ennio Vivaldi, the university’s rector, concluded that until two weeks after the second dose is administered the vaccine “has no significant effect.” He added, “We have to be empathetic, take care of ourselves, wear masks, follow health measures, and stay home even if we have the vaccine. That’s the only way we’re going to get out of the pandemic.”
Some 93% of the doses administered were the CoronaVac vaccine, manufactured by Chinese state run pharmaceutical Sinovac, and 7% the more effective Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. Chile’s CoronaVac study results are comparable to previous CoronaVac trials elsewhere and “were not a surprise,” said Cortés. “The error was that the government was not clear enough in explaining the importance of the second dose,” she said. “We need to be very clear in our risk communication. You need to wait until the second dose.”
Infections in Chile are also likely being driven by the more transmissible P.1 variant first identified in Brazil, which is believed to be playing a role in a current surge in cases across South America. New coronavirus infections are increasing in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela, said the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) in a briefing on 14 April.4
PAHO’s director, Carissa Etienne, called on governments to focus on public health measures to bring the crisis under control and not to rely on vaccines. “I cannot stress this enough: for most countries, vaccines are not going to stop this wave of the pandemic,” she said.

What’s the update for today?
i'm sure 1 of your beloved venes coming to our land is bringing yet another case of the brazilian variant along with them. it will be making mas' soon (or samba?) throughout the country.
otherwise u have to wait till 4 pm for the official update from MOH.
Hello redmanjp,
If you wear your masks, keep your distances and sanitize, you have nothing to worry about.
Stop blaming others and look at yourselves bro.

How did the Brazil variant spread from venezuelan to trini? I'm pretty sure there aren't any venes running around and pulling down person's masks and sneezing in their faces. So obviously it's the locals who are not doing the correct thing. We're always looking to blame someone else without taking some personal responsibility.redmanjp wrote:MaxPower wrote:redmanjp wrote:MaxPower wrote:Team,

I wear my mask diligently. As I have said the mask is to prevent transmission FROM the person wearing it, in other words the venes coming in would have to be wearing it which many are not, they already breaking both the law and protocol by not quarantining why would they care to wear one.
However not even locals can come into our country without first getting an exemption and then when they get here have to quarantine in a state facility for at least 7 days (or 14 from the UK due to that variant), yet non nationals are coming in without any exemption nor quarantine, and now with sequencing it is now confirmed that a South American variant has arrived here despite the official borders being closed, but unofficial borders open with migrants arriving daily, but only some of them being caught. The rest are undoubtedly spreading the virus and variants and now as of the past week we have proof, thanks to sequencing.
This is a failure of Govt to address the health threat from the migrant population and also to even admit, at least until now that it's even happening. Only when questioned in parliament the Health Minister said he can't rule it out and the first 'local' case (meaning not a person repatriated and quarantined by the state) being an immigrant, meaning he really know it happening and with the evidence of the variants revealed in the past 2 weeks can no longer deny it.
While yes trinis need to take more responsibility, we need to tackle the variant threat from the source. Otherwise the measures we took to contain the wild type (original strain) would not be sufficient with more and more cases of variants. but speaking of trinis, the ones involved in aiding and abetting the illegal entry of venes are certainly not wearing masks while being exposed to them or transporting them.
This particular variant has been shown to be more severe for young people and even children, so migrants coming into our country are not just posing a severe threat to old ppl with the virus but young people of working age and children! This is not about xenophobia, it's about addressing a severe threat to the very lives of the local population, and it needs to be dealt with.
The same way your beloved Prime Minister got covid, you can get it but this time since you love and interact with venes they would give you the Brazil variant and land you in Caura or Couva hospital regardless of your age or health conditions.

Yup and I imagine this isn't the peak just yet, we will be having 200+ almost everyday given the number of tests being done and the higher positivity ratio.

so plenty ppl walking out there spreading virus and not being tested
quite likely 2-3 times more than being caught with tests.....
countries with plenty testing does lockdown over 15%

this peak will last at least another 3-4 weeks even if they take the harshest lockdown possible
