Gartner: Android at 36% Smart Phone Sales While Windows Phone Languishes
Image

Following Millennial Media's findings this morning, it's Gartner's turn to drop their latest figures on us. How has Android been doing in terms of sales over the last few months? Very well, thank you. According to Gartner, more than 36 million Android devices were shipped in the first quarter of 2011, accounting for 36 percent of the market. This is three times over the same time frame from one year ago.

Turning our attention to Windows Phone for a moment, the Microsoft mobile OS isn't doing all that well for itself. Only 3.66 million devices are running their software, with roughly 1.6 million of them powered by the new release. This represents a drop from 6.8% a year ago to 3.6% today, a move in the wrong direction by anyone's standard.

We're all for competition in the mobile space because we need companies and platforms to keep Android innovating but Microsoft might not be able to help here. Are they a has-been who needs to bow out of the mobile race or will Nokia help revive their efforts?

Lookin for a nice, scrollable contact list widget to use with ADW Launcher. Something similar to the contacts widget that comes with Launcher Pro, or the Buddies Now that comes with the Galaxy S launcher.
Anybody have anything?

You normally find it user "Personalize", but i never seen it in my current ROM (CoreDroid), launcherpro does the same job so i just configured it in there

You notice any difference in battery or WIFI performance with the radio flash?

Next Google Nexus will be either HTC, or LG built

Image

The Nexus line is the true and original Google phone and we've seen two already. And now we came across a photo of a third Nexus phone in its testing stage. The phone looks HTC-made and lacks the menu/home/back/search keys. It will probably run Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest Android version.

The photo doesn't show much, except a generic phone design, but the information, given to TechHog.com is pretty juicy and intriguing. It seems a Google developer sent this in and reportedly said that the next Google phone will feature some amazing specs. It will most definitely feature the latest (yet unseen) Android version, which integrates with Honeycomb (hence the lack of additional keys under the display), has a HDPA+ and Sprint CDMA (which would mean an early or exclusive appearance at US telecom Sprint), front-facing camera and a rumored first appearance in December this year, along with Ice Cream Sandwich itself.

That's about it for specs and as for the name, it's not given yet but it may not be Nexus 3. It's still undecided. The Nexus phone line isn't a mainstream gadget on its own. It's made to carry the latest software version, in order for it to be a platform for dev testing. And in the case of the original Nexus One it had an HTC twin brother in the face of the Desire. The Nexus S had one in the Galaxy S so we're hoping this yet unannounced 3rd Nexus to have a global market brother as well.

We'll keep track of the matter and update as soon as news becomes available. Rumors so far suggest that either HTC or LG will make the phone.

ASUS targets Christmas for Padfone launch, hints at Ice Cream Sandwich (video hands-on)

Image

We just got to spend some quality time with ASUS' newly unveiled Padfone and you can see the smartphone that doubles up as a tablet on video after the break. It's still a mere mockup for now, but ASUS has big plans for it -- plans that coalesce around the Christmas period and the very latest version of Android at that time. ASUS' Benson Lin was careful not to openly admit the company intends to ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, but he did point out that you can't launch a smartphone with Honeycomb as the OS. We were encouraged to draw our own conclusions.

The smartphone is actually the only smart aspect of this hardware pair -- the slate part acts as a display, a set of speakers, an extended battery, and an I/O extender, but it doesn't work by itself. ASUS also tells us there'll be other functionality enabled by the tablet panel, but that's being kept under wraps for now. Compatibility between the display dock and subsequent phone generations is being contemplated but couldn't be confirmed, and as to the UI, ASUS says it'll be almost the same as its second-gen Android tablets. You heard that right, second generation ASUS Android tablets -- to succeed the Transformer and Slider -- will be coming around the same time as the Padfone.

Does anyone know if its commonplace for Android phones to have such short battery lives? I find myself having to charge my phone more than once a day. My BB has way better extended battery life than my Android.

I'm curious to know how the IPhone compares as I'm strongly considering switching.

^it would depend on the specific model, what apps you may have running in the background etc.

I get a full day and then some from my Galaxy S and thats with moderate usage, both voice and data.

Not sure if this app was posted before.

Since i have free data this week i had the opportunity to use a new app i downloaded called speedview. The app tells you the speed that you are traveling at by using GPS, it is not extremly acurate but still pretty cool. The pro version also gives you 0-100 and quater mile times.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/speedview/com.codesector.speedview.free

Another app similar app that i did not try yet is fastest droid.

you guys can check them out.

stats updates...

Android is top smartphone OS in the US, iOS is a close second

According to the latest report by the analysts from Nielsen, Android enjoys the highest usage among smartphone platforms in the United States, followed by iOS and BlackBerry OS.

Image

Some 36 percent of US smartphone users have an Android smartphone. In comparison, 26% are using the Apple iOS while 23% are using RIM's BlackBerry OS.

The remaining 15% of the smartphone pie is taken by Windows Mobile, which still has a decent 9% user base, and by WebOS, Symbian, Windows Phone 7 and PalmOS. It's a little disappointing to see Symbian despite being the oldest platforms here and still very much alive unlike the now defunct Windows Mobile having no more than 2% market share. Same goes for HP's WebOS, which deserved a lot more success than it received.

Android's overall domination comes as no surprise really, considering the huge number of Android devices out there and new ones coming out almost every other week now. Apple's iOS, on the other hand, has so far been restricted to a handful of devices, ten to be precise, with four versions of the iPhone and iPod touch each and two versions of the iPad, launched over a period of four years. RIM too has a fair number of handsets under its belt and has been around much longer than the other two. We are sure if this chart showed smartphone users across the world, however, the difference between Android and iOS would be even higher as Android phones are available in lot more areas compared to iOS.
