Subwoofer advise needed...

Postby wheel whores » December 28th, 2019, 5:28 pm

My system 80prs head unit, morel 6.5 components front, morel 6x9 rear running on the deck and jbl GT-A402 amp to power the sub. Car is a ek3 hatch ..... Looking for a sub for a corner stealth box.... So far I seeing the MTX 5510 10" / JL audio 12W1v2-4 12" and Rockford P1 12". Need something to hit the lows nice in a seal enclosure. Your input on this will be greatly appreciated. :fadein:

for me personally that amp wont cut it , Bridged, 4 ohms: 120 watts x 1 chan.

that is not even 1\2 of what each of those subs rated at

imo get a amp that does 300-500 rms ...

You really wont get much of any sub with such a small rating.

opt for something decent one time and later on add in an amplifier.

you can try an ID10. works nice in small sealed enclosures. You may need 400W though. I guess you can upgrade amplifier in time.
You already got the enclosure?

No enclosure yet... Mids will be off the deck alone and it's a hatch so would not need much bass output jus to complement the mids.... The Rockford r1 would be good but not getting it locally....will check out the id 10"

fully agree with what nerve said

as a store owner & person who selling car audio almost 15yrs no customers really ask for a sub rated lower than 300rms

i used to run sealed enclosures alot long time & my advice [even though u say u want complimentary bass] is to get more than u think u need since sealed output is generally considerably lower than a ported . so if u think u need 150 go 300 if u need 300 go 500-600ish etc , doesnt mean u need to be running it max all d time as u can simply lower d sub output on ur deck

RF p2 12 400rms is also a good choice [my store has in case u need , 10am-5pm 337-6128] , i also sell that mtx 5510 & JL by order , i dont like to mess with fiberglass so i can send u by somebody who does that type of work .....

Hmmm. Everything other than sealed you mentioned making me think about an 8" in a ported spec box. Lil food for thought. Good luck.

Some questions better left unanswered.

Rumor has it that the last quake we got was actually rovin testing out the bassline.
We all thought we knew what low frequency bass was until we sat in his wagon. And no epicenter and them nonsense in there. Not even a preamp.

Have not seen a 8" with a wide frequency range .... Really looking for an efficient sub... Seal box to minimize space taken up and for a nice sound. It's for glass up listening. I don't like the sound of pioneer.

Sub box like that would cost atleast 1000

If u using a basic sub with plans to upgrade later I won't do a glassed box yet since it would be built around the sub you are using and may not work with a sub when time to upgrade in terms of cut out diameter...volume...porting

Imo when you get the sub u plan to keep for a while then consider the glassed box

No plans to upgrade the sub that why I wanted an opinion on an efficient wide frequency sub for sq..... I only have experience with the T1 15" and kicker comp 12.... Both worked great and well I used the pioneer but never liked it....

Spectro did a 6.5 inch sub box that dig into the 25hz range and I was thoroughly impressed as well. Very smooth 25-60s bass.

something does not sound right here.

I built a box for another sub some time back and a pioneer was closest to me so I put it in the box and gave it a try. A coworker took a listen later day and swore it was some kinda expensive sub. I actually left it in the box for a few weeks. There are better options, I have had better subs and I have heard better. Bot for something that costs about $400.00, i'd say its a damn good budget sub.

I have an idq8, works well in a small sealed enclosure. Very accurate but I like my wub wub wub.

The DD 200 series will work great also.100-300 rated. But only the newer redline if going sealed, has a bigger spider and more compliant soft parts than the previous models.

Well sounds like you have a bigger budget than $400.00.
I'd say since enclosure is your constraint beware of what you choose. Not all are equal. Some may have specs for small boxes but you need a tonne of power to get it loud vs ported and bigger.

I know ID likes smaller boxes as well as JL so I bought 3 to play with from kaizen sale last year.

The specs are odd for these but carfreak and the guys impressed us with some a few years back at a meet.

There is a small recommended box for them as well as a vented. I went with vented and I find the port area looks suspect. But we will see.

Fun fact, it can work as a toolbox if you take the cover off. ImageImageImageImage
