Cops investigate ‘broken’ leg of 8-month-old infant

By LAUREL V WILLIAMS Thursday, April 30 2015

click on pic to zoom inINJURED BABY: Eight-month-old Inshan Bansraj wears a cast on his left leg....CENTRAL Division police are investigating the circumstances under which an eight-month-old baby sustained a “broken” left leg last month.

The baby’s mother, Shazim Bansraj, told police that her son Inshan sustained the injuries while at a private daycare centre, either due to negligence, or physical abuse, but the owner is denying the allegations.

Bansraj explained that on March 20, having dropped off the baby earlier in the day at the daycare at Caroni Savannah Road, Charlieville, Chaguanas, she picked him up and he appeared to be in pain. As such she telephoned the owner to enquire the reasons for the baby’s constant crying.

“I called her as soon as I left the premises to ask why his foot was hurting. She (owner) claimed that Ishan was creeping a lot in the afternoon. I called again to tell her about his leg being swollen and black around his ankle, and that we were taking him to the doctor that same evening,” Bansraj said.

The mother, of Charlieville, added that a doctor initially said her son sustained a sprain. A further medical examination by a paediatrician revealed the left leg was broken. Doctors informed the mother that the cause of the injury could be a result of a fall, or major twist (by someone).

“On the Monday after the incident when we did an x-ray we realised the child foot was broken. We requested to see the video footage and the owner gave a story that it was deleted in error by her husband. She claimed he was taking the hard drive to recover the footage, but did not succeed,” Bansraj said.

She said based on information she received from former workers of the daycare, the children are subjected to physical abuse at times. Bansraj charged that her elder son aged two-and-a-half-years who also attended the daycare, used to complain about being hit by the owner. The mother said she enquired about it, but the owner denied it. “Ishan wore a splint (orthopaedic device used to protect and support injured bones and joints) for a week-and-a-half. I remove my two children from the daycare. The public must be aware of what goes on there,” she said.

Bansraj added, “ My two-and-a-half-year-old went there for five months, and the baby for three. In that time she never send pictures of my kids. That day she sent.”

Bansraj reported the matter to the Chaguanas CID on March 24.

Contacted yesterday the owner told Newsday that as far as she knows, when the parents collected the child he was in good spirits.

“Nothing was wrong with him. He was happy and laughing. About two to three hours after they left, the mother called to say she saw a mark on his leg. His injury has nothing to do with us at the daycare. There was no injury when he left,” said the owner.

The owner added the matter is in the hands of her attorney.

Officers of Chaguanas CID have since interviewed her, and two other employees from the day care centre.

So when she collect the child he was in pain? Or it was after she left the child get pain? I would think a broken leg is painful.

The child was in pain when the mother took him on top of her to breastfeed. The owner of the daycare is hiding the truth.

The mother of the child is a co-worker of mine. There is lots more to this article that can't be mentioned right now because of the ongoing police investigation.

This country really needs to implement better laws to protect children.
