Christopher holds the licenses for his father's work, so he is allowing content that may have only been present in journals, unpublished scripts, notes etc that JRR Tolkien wrote in order to create the additional movie content.

I can't wait to visit New Zealand one day and see this in person! An art installation featuring a gigantic Gollum sticking his head underwater grabbing for fish was installed by Weta at the Wellington, New Zealand airport this week. We don't need to tell you that it's all tied in with a promotion for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, with the first movie from the trilogy landing in theaters this December in just a few months. TheOneRing.net snapped a few photos of the huge Gollum art piece (and it's team of Weta designers) after it was installed, and there's video of the entire process, too. "So juicy sweet."

The first photo via Screenslam shows the entire Gollum installation, with wooden bones(?) sticking up too.

Tolkien's The Hobbit, being directed by Peter Jackson as three separate movies, is set in Middle-Earth 60 years before Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in a trilogy ten years ago. The films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, were shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest cameras. The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arrives in theaters in 3D & 48FPS on December 14th.

Finally saw it today, very bad storyline , far inferior to the LOTR adaptation. I think the writers tried to much to involve LOTR connection as oppose to keeping true to the Hobbit itself. Too much time spent on filming hungry Trolls and singing Orcs. The special effects and general entertainment factor is very high, especially the landscape filming in 3D, I recommend to be viewed in 3D. The movie ended with an obvious sequel to come.

they are splitting one book into 3 movies and incorporating a bit more of the Middle Earth story from the Tolkien scripts guided by Christopher Tolkien. It is expected that they will stay longer on parts of the story to carry this out.

My comment is in relation to the book. I just feel that there are more important aspects that can be focused on than some of the nonsense they did. For example SPOILER ALERT:

, there was one scene where the group ( Dwarves + Bilbo) encountered some trolls that kidnap two of their horses. The trolls were cooking food and tried to eventually cook the Dwarves with a lot of comedic cross talk and fighting etc in between. This to me occupied 15-20 minutes of the film not to mention the part of the fat, singing Troll overload....anyway let me not reveal too much. Overall the movie has a great entertainment factor and the general filming is incredible, seeing it on IMAX 3D for me was worth the time and effort. They showed a preview of a Star Trek movie to be released in Jan 2013 ( IMAX 3D) the special effects in 3D looks incredible also.

I never go by reviews, especially for films based on books.....worse yet, reviews from folks who didn't even read the books

Still don't know all the dwarves by name but I can pick out a silvan elf from a sindar in the darkest part of Mikrwood.

Very disappointed by the reviewers comparing it to the lotr trilogy. People were expecting too much I think. But a review also said that this movie was the best revisit to middle earth since the fellowship of the rings. I like how that sounds.
