Karim: Car-racers to get 65 acres of land

Postby hustla_ambition101 » May 8th, 2012, 10:33 pm

Government has allocated 65 acres of land, between Waterloo and Orange Valley, for the construction of an international-standard auto-sport complex to house drag- racing, circuit-racing, Solodex, carting and all other forms of motor sports. This was confirmed yesterday by Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim.

Speaking at the opening of the accommodation for University of the West Indies (UWI) medical students at the San Fernando General Hospital yesterday, Karim said: “We will be trying our best to get our young people off our streets.” He also said Government planned to transform Waterloo into the hub of ship-building and maritime training.

A tourist information centre and a weather station would be established there, Karim said. He said the 12 primary schools and eight secondary schools in Waterloo would use and be the custodians of that weather station. He also said Dr Roger Pulwarty, who won a Nobel Prize for his work on climate change, with specific reference to El Niño, will assist in holding climatological courses through UTT at Waterloo.

Pulwarty is a lecturer at the University of the West Indies’ Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, and also at the University of Colorado.

LOL

That 65 acres in Waterloo was given "in principle" to motorsport since 2007 by then Minister of Sport Roger Boynes to then TTASA President Jameer Ali. Absolutely NOTHING has happened since then except being mentioned when needed accordingly.

Look the topic from 2007 is here
viewtopic.php?t=154389

Every TTASA administration since then has tried to revive it without success.

The letter from the Ministry allocating the 65 acres in Waterloo states:
Re: Allocation of Lands for the Establishment of Motor Sporting Facilities in Trinidad & Tobago (dated Oct 2007)

Reference is made to the subject at caption.

Please be advised that the Cabinet has today approved the following:
(a) the grant of a temporary license to the Trinidad & Tobago Automobile Sports Association (TTASA) for the utilization of the airstrip at Camden for motor sporting facilities for a period of one (1) year as an immediate solution, subject to all statutory approvals;

(b) in principle, to the allocation of 65 acres of land situated at Orange Valley, Waterloo, belonging to Caroni (1975) Ltd., for the establishment, by the state, of motor sporting facilities;

(c) Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs submit for the consideration of Cabinet within two (2) months' time detailed proposals for the use of the permanent facilities referred to at (b) above.

Yours faithfully,

Roger Boynes
MINISTER
Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs

"in principle" could very well mean "we will think about it".
Also (c) never happened. Two months past Oct 2007 done gone LONG time now and even the Gov't changed, different Cabinet - so...

I'm not sure what is going on. The Ministry of Sport is supposed to be the line ministry for motorsport. Last week (May 1st 2012) the Minister of Sport Anil Roberts said, during his speech at a conference at the Hyatt, that NO action will be taken towards a motorsport facility until ALL the motorsport bodies can unite and work together (if I remember correctly the last Minister of Sport Gary Hunt said the same thing during his tenure). Yet the Minister of Tourism Rupert Griffith got up right after and in his speech said that his ministry is looking at land in Valencia to accommodate a world class motorsport facility. Now the Minister of Tertiary Education Fazal Karim is talking, not even a week later, about the 65 acres in Waterloo that was earmarked since 2007 but never materialised.

while the population in the racing world would like this move,it's a rather dumb thing to do when you have a country who relies on importing everything we eat...

getting the land is one thing... developing it into a usable facility is another... there hasn't been any mention of funding or even proposed costs for the development of the facility.

Development of even the most basic of facilities (say just track and some bleachers) will easily run into the tens of millions.

Until there is a plan in place and funds allocated it's going to remain as a parcel of land.

That said... given that it's a government allocated parcel of land... what provisions are in place for private investors?

^ well the Tourism Minister announced last week that he is allocating land in Valencia quarry for a home for motorsport. So it seems that it is not necessary for the line ministry only to make such a move.

Strange though - TTASA has not heard anything about this Waterloo "revival". SO they are just as surprised by the Guardian article. The last document TTASA got concerning Waterloo was the 2007 letter from Boynes which stated the land was earmarked "in principle", that issue has not moved forward since then.
