DON'T rush to judgment!
This is the call from Works and Transport Minister Austin Jack Warner on the issue surrounding Sasha Mohammed, special adviser to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and alleged threatening e-mails sent under the guise "Janice Thomas" attacking Express Editor-in-Chief Omatie Lyder and Express reporter Anna Ramdass.
Warner, the Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West, spoke to members of the media yesterday at Caura River, Pool 2, during a Father's Day/appreciation gathering for his constituents.
"I am quite sure in the furtherance of time some statement would be made, not by me because she does not work with me... I think that every story has three sides and I am not one to jump to conclusions, I would leave it at that... at this point in time I would not be saying anything. I don't know the facts, I don't know what's involved and I can't make any comment," Warner said.
Asked whether he believes Mohammed should step down given that police probing the alleged threats made to Lyder and Ramdass say the e-mails stemmed from Mohammed's computer, Warner said: "We seem to have a rush to judgment that everybody must step down, even Jack Warner."
Warner said before anyone steps down, all the facts should be made clear as "there is rush to judgment", adding that many people have fallen "victim to media hype".
"People don't step down just so, you step down after you have studied the thing seriously and you have heard all sides and therefore I am not one to rush to judgment and I am sure the Prime Minister neither," Warner added.
Warner said though police found the threatening e-mail which stated "their day in the sun is over... this is the beginning... they will understand the consequences of their actions..." came from Mohammed's computer, he was not certain that the police found she was culpable.
"A person could drive my car and get in an accident does not mean that I am driving. I am not making any excuse. What I am saying, get the facts and then make a judgment, don't rush to judgment. The Prime Minister would do what she has to do, I am not going to make judgment. I don't know if she is tainted and I am not going to prescribe judgment. I don't have the facts and nothing I can tell you today can change that."
The threatening e-mails were sent on January 30 after a series of Express exclusives highlighted the fact that Reshmi Ramnarine was appointed head of the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) on January 14 without the proper qualifications and a padded resume.
Ramnarine, a close friend of Mohammed's, resigned from the post on January 22, stating she was of the view that "the work of the agency and my duties as director as well as my personal safety has been compromised by the high level of exposure over the past few days".

FIFA’s Jack Warner resigns, bribery investigation dropped...

ZURICH—Jack Warner quit as a FIFA vice-president on Monday and had a bribery probe against him dropped by world football’s governing body.

Warner and Asian football chief Mohamed bin Hammam were suspended by FIFA last month after they were accused of offering $40,000 cash payments to Caribbean voters during bin Hammam’s presidential campaign to unseat Sepp Blatter.

Warner spent 28 years on FIFA’s executive committee but stepped down days after some of his Caribbean Football Union followers were interviewed by former FBI agents enlisted by FIFA to investigate the scandal.

“Jack A. Warner has informed FIFA about his resignation from his posts in international football,” FIFA said in a statement. “FIFA regrets the turn of events that have led to Mr. Warner’s decision. His resignation has been accepted by world football’s governing body ... Mr. Warner is leaving FIFA by his own volition after nearly 30 years of service.”

“As a consequence of Mr. Warner’s self-determined resignation, all ethics committee procedures against him have been closed and the presumption of innocence is maintained,” the FIFA statement added.

Warner’s decision to step down as a member of FIFA’s powerful ruling panel could help preserve his political career in his native Trinidad and Tobago, where he is a government minister.

Police on the Caribbean island had said they would ask FIFA for any evidence of wrongdoing gathered in the bribery probe.

Warner and Bin Hammam were accused of allegedly arranging the $40,000 cash payments in a Port of Spain hotel during the Qatari official’s campaign visit on May 10.

Warner had “chosen to focus on his important work on behalf of the people and government of Trinidad and Tobago as a cabinet minister and as the chairman of the United National Congress, the major party in his country’s coalition government,” the statement said. “The FIFA Executive Committee, the FIFA President and the FIFA management thank Mr. Warner for his services to Caribbean, CONCACAF and international football over his many years devoted to football at both regional and international level, and wish him well for the future.”

Warner joined FIFA’s inner circle in 1983 and seven years later was elected president of the confederation which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The 68-year-old official was given another four-year term unopposed at the CONCACAF congress held May 3 in Miami.

Bin Hammam did not attend in Miami, claiming he had visa problems to enter the United States even though he holds a diplomatic passport.

Caribbean members of CONCACAF were then summoned to a two-day conference in Trinidad to meet Blatter’s election rival.

However, delegates from the Bahamas turned whistleblower and alerted Warner’s longtime CONCACAF No. 2 Chuck Blazer of the United States, who commissioned a file of evidence to present to FIFA.

The dossier included statements from football federation officials from Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands who also declined the payments. Puerto Rico and Surinam later agreed to return their $40,000 payments as pressure on witnesses intensified, while other CFU members insisted no FIFA corruption rules were broken in Trinidad.

Warner had been a longtime ally of Sepp Blatter, who was re-elected as FIFA president when bin Hammam dropped out of the election.

Bin Hammam withdrew hours before the ethics panel met and provisionally suspended him, and three days before the election.

The Asian Football Confederation president is now set to face a full ethics inquiry, expected next month, without his fellow confederation boss.

Sasha denies sending threatening e-mails

SASHA MOHAMMED, adviser to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has for the first time denied that she sent threatening e-mails to Express editor-in-chief Omatie Lyder and reporter Anna Ramdass.
Mohammed, through her attorneys Jagdeo Singh, Ravi Rajcoomar and Kelvin Ramkissoon, sent a three-page letter to Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs yesterday, asking what offence she committed.
The letter has come on the heels of mounting calls for Persad-Bissessar to dismiss Mohammed and the police to lay criminal charges against Mohammed after their investigations revealed that the threatening e-mails came from Mohammed's computer at her home.
Persad-Bissessar remained mum on the issue for the fifth day yesterday.
Last Friday, ASP Ajith Persad and Cpl Rennie Grant of the Port of Spain CID interviewed Mohammed in the presence of her former attorney, Om Lalla, regarding the e-mails which were sent to Lyder and Ramdass in January.
Officers told Mohammed that their investigation showed that the e-mails came from her computer at her San Juan home after Internet provider Flow confirmed that the IP address from which the e-mails were sent was assigned to Mohammed.
After Lyder and Ramdass reported the incident to police on January 31, Persad and Grant asked officers from the Police Cyber Unit to assist in tracing the IP address of the sender of the e-mail.
Officers at the unit were able to determine the e-mails were sent from an IP address in the name of Mohammed at her San Juan home and a court order was obtained which directed Internet provider Flow to release the relevant information to police.
The information provided by Flow revealed that the e-mail originated from Mohammed's computer and Internet account.
Mohammed's attorneys, in their letter to Gibbs, stated as far as they are aware, there is no offence within the law books of the country which their client is accused of committing.
They said, "We make this enquiry since in our respectful view, having examined and considered the factual matrix of the case, there appears to be no known breach of the criminal law for which our client can be the subject of investigation, let alone be deemed culpable so as to justify an admonition on the part of your officers.
"The much touted 'cyber bullying' concept is not a criminal offence in Trinidad and Tobago, and is as such an alien concept which forms no part of the laws and jurisprudence of this country. Any conduct suggestive thereof cannot therefore constitute a basis for a police investigation or offence.
The attorneys said while Mohammed was being interviewed, no particular offence was identified to her by the police.
Mohammed's attorneys stated: "Our client has further instructed that upon advice and instructions from her former counsel, and acting upon such advice, she remained silent and but clearly denied any wrongdoing on her part or any knowledge of wrongdoing and denied anything that was put to her by the police officers undertaking the interview.
"Further, we are instructed that despite the admonition issued by the police to her, curiously, no specific offence was identified to our client as being the subject of investigations by the police. Our client was however, then given an assurance by the police that the issuing of this warning would have brought conclusion to the matter.
The letter added, "The position of our client however, has been, and continues to be, that she denies knowledge about the issuing of the said purported e-mails to the concerned parties and in this regard, cannot be held culpable.
"In the circumstances where the said police officers met with our client and issued a warning to her, there would have had to be a basis in law for them to do so. We therefore now seek clarification from you as to what is the specific offence which our client is alleged to have committed and the necessary particulars thereof."
The lawyers stated in their letter to Gibbs: "It would have been wholly wrong for the police to have come to a conclusion of the commission of no criminal offence, yet proceed to issue a warning to our client. In these circumstances, our client has been advised that the action of the police in pursuing such a course of conduct was illegal and a flagrant violation of the rules of procedural fairness to which our client is justly entitled."
Gibbs was given three days to respond.
Mohammed, a former journalist, joined the People's Partnership Government as engagement adviser to Persad-Bissessar, six months after the May 24 general election last year.
Police had initiated an investigation after Lyder and Ramdass reported they were threatened in an e-mail in January sent to them by someone adopting the alias "Janice Thomas" in connection with the Reshmi Usha Ramnarine story being investigated by the Express.
The threatening e-mail, which targeted Lyder and Ramdass, was addressed to editors and reporters of the Express and staff of CCN-TV6 as well as other media houses, accused Lyder and Ramdass of a personal vendetta against Ramnarine.
The e-mail stated that "their day in the sun is over" and "this is the beginning ... they will understand the consequences of their actions..."
The Express first broke the story of the questionable appointment of Ramnarine to the post of director of the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) and had at the time been investigating how she came to be hired as director of the SSA with false credentials.
