avoid a $2k ticket! LED Parklight bulb review!

Postby TESTED performance » November 9th, 2010, 11:26 am

Observe the 1st photo carefully!
(top)White 5LED parklight bulb: $40 TTD per pair. Sold by "Dual Star" on the forums

(below)Grayish clear 5LED parklight bulb: $100 TTD per pair. sold by "equipped2ripp"

Both sellers claim that the bulbs they sell emit white light. Testing proved that only one actually did. This is certainly one perfect example of you get what you pay for.
Observe the copper wire installed in the $40 LED bulb during the test. This is because the $40 bulbs fit so poorly into the socket that they get dislodged by even the slightest vibration causing them to appear blown until properly reseated into the socket. The thicker copper wire that was added helped but still did not solve the problem. Of course the real problem with these bulbs is that even without the fitment nightmares they don't actually emit anything close to actual white light. If you fancy the idea of paying a $2000 fine for having parklight bulbs that either don't work because they lost contact due to vibration or they actually work and appear blue then by all means get the $40 dollar bulbs.

FOR REFERENCE this photo was taken with the HID XENNON low beam switched on.
The HID KIT IS A crystal white 5700 degree Kelvin colour temperature kit.
OEM HID KITS are Daylight white 4700 degrees Kelvin in colour temperature.
Any colour temperature higher than 5700 degrees Kelvin appears bluish instead of white
Any colour temperature higher than 4700 degrees Kelvin may be considered illegal
Any colour temperature higher than 5700 degrees Kelvin looks blatantly illegal

No! The tape is just there as a marker to make it very easy to track which headlamp is which during the closup shots. I hope you found my experiment useful!

first of all that is a hilarious signature! secondly you should consider dropping the first part of your tuner id or change it to something more worthy. And Last of all I was in no way attempting to "make out" anyone or thing in the thread. Just providing factual consumer information based on tested and proven results. The type of information I wish would be easily available when i'm looking to purchase similar items. Please don't make it personal.

The HID kit you have installed is also illegal and you will get ticketed for it.
It will cause a glare for oncoming drivers because the housing was not designed for it.

ok but you want the $40 dollar bulb to hold in the socket better then you should have bent the copper wire the other way around the base of the bulb so that the positive and the negative are on opposite sides :|

Observe the photo carefully. You will notice that there are two contacts on each side of the bulb. Unlike the $100 type which has 1 contact per side. With the $40 bulb it doesn't matter which terminal you beef up really as long as there's one copper wire added per side it helps. I chose to install the copper wire on the terminal with the thinner wire on each side.

You may know it is illegal but to the average policeman because my high beams are still halogen and almost every car factory equipped with xenon headlights come in that configuration I would easily be able to convice someone that the xenons came from the factory as an OEM option.
Secondly 5700K HID bulbs are not actually illegal trust me on that. They just aren't the industry standard.
Third, you can observe in the last photo taken with the HID bulb turned on, that there isn't even the slightest hint of glare obove where the standard projector headlight cutoff line would be. That is because I research HID glare shields and fabricated a pair of them myself and installed them then refocused the lights. As a matter of fact the glare from my hid kit is now less than the glare that the OEM halogen low beams would have emitted. They light up the road at least twice as bright though.

dunno abt this shaking and thing causing the bulbs not to light, but i read a sticky awhile aback on this form that suggested that 6000k was the OEM standard

i spoke to at least one powerseller regarding the sale of higher intensity lights i.e. 7000, 8000 etc
and he told me that it is customers choice

however, sellers should know that they are contributing to the bad driving situation on the road by selling products which cause harsh glare to either drivers

4300k roughly gives the most luminous output while remaining an almost pure white colour..

Concerning LED lights, I just use some 13 led pieces I picked up on ebay for cheap.. license plate lights nah, looks good on my car
Concerning park lights, I use PIAA wedge bulbs but price for price the LED looks much better, brighter and will probably outlast the PIAA

TESTED, altec55 has 9led bulbs at 120 a pair and its diamond white. been using em a long while now and passed thru several roadblocks and no probs whatsoever. whichever seller u buy from is your choice but u will not get a ticket from either of the bulbs you posted. dualstar has the 4300k warm white and equip has the 6000 cool white. ur choice for looks!

i really like the idea of testing the bulbs its really informative, but i don't agree with you calling the names of the suppliers, i think that should've been left out, you could've just said the bulbs were purchased from powersellers.

I get your point I just wanted to point out who you can source either of the bulbs from because you may not understand this but MANY people reading this review will actually prefer the blueish bulbs because they think it looks more "cool" trust me on that. I always see reviews about products and no one ever lets you know where you can get each one. I'm never going to review something without providing the retailer info.

I haven't come across the 9LED that altec55 sells thanks for the heads up maybe i'll check them out but the ones i'm using now are perfect so even if i review the 9LED type i'll stick with the ones I have now.
btw 4300K is no where close to the colour temperature of the LED bulbs dual star sells. it's higher than 6000K with all certainty. If anybody wants proof I can get the colour temp meter from the office and prove it.... After all that's what I get paid to do
