good question ,

although some may prefer what is know locally as "cabbage" as it is flatter and not a vertical grower as most species of the hyacinth , in my experience they don't handle the sun very well and are less durable than the hyacinth

morning fellas,

I'm looking to build an above ground pond for a pair of RES turtles. I currently have them in an aquarium 2.5'L x 1'W x 1'H. They've grown pretty fast and so the tank is too small for them now. My plan is to build it against the fence wall. I'll need to have ample swimming area as well as dry area so they can come out to bask......not sure about breeding accommodations-may that could be included.

If anyone has anything close to this or any suggestions whatsoever, it will be much appreciated :) pics?

42 pages kinda painful to go through

^if the pond is strictly for the terapins, about a foot to a foot and a half is great depth for swimming without making things unmanageable.

an 18 sq ft area sounds reasonable, half water/half roaming area, you can design the pond itself with a sloped bottom or add rock perches in the pond for the critters to lounge on and bask in the sun etc...a small set up like that, you can use thin set (tile laying mixture) to seal the bottom and make it uber easy to empty and clean once in a while. they enjoy perching close to water so they can take off in case sh1t pops off, so oblige them :)

Breeding:
If the pair are ready to breed, make sure whatever substrate you use for the "land" section of your enclosure is around 5-6" deep, they bury their eggs for thermoregulation, so give them ample depth to do their thing properly.

Sharp sand doesn't sit well with them for laying apparently, a mixture of fine saw dust and red sand works but i think using washed beach sand (think mayaro/manzan type sand) will work alot better...
include a shaded area over the sand, ideally a corner would suffice, but big enough to comfortably shade both of your RES, that way they have options when laying.

Leaf litter etc helps when breeding etc, as does a couple small water plants/lilies etc and guppies in the water....creatures tend to breed alot easier when they're aware there is nutrition available for any offspring.

Aim for the slightly deeper pond area if you intend to start breeding, as mating and copulation occurs underwater, use adequate filtration/water circulation, high water quality means happy turtles, they grow quicker, mature faster and may start breeding quicker than the average 5 year maturity period.

good luck buddy, update the thread with your progress

nice idea, thinking of doing one myself...need some turtles though

Razkal, that reply making me more excited about this :D thanks a lot! good enough info there to start with. I'll post any queries I have while progressing.

I'll try to take some pics as well...

one thing though, you said washed beach sand. Does that simply mean to wash it in fresh water? Any chemicals?

thanks :)

^yeah, just a regular rinse off, maybe a couple times in a large container. basically just to get the excess salt off (residual won't be harmful, its natural salts/minerals that may have their benefits) and any debris, chemicals and ghee (from kartik :|) that may bummy your terapins' condition.

a good idea is to "buffer" the substrate-pond border with some smaller grained gravel (same depth as your substrate), this will help keep sand where sand is supposed to be and not get the substrate waterlogged with their in-and-out..looks nice too.

Ah think Raj had some.
For the size, them thing does be pricey. But that brilliant red color hard to beat.
