As cases wane, COVID's next phase is predictability, experts say

... Almost every flu season in the past 10 years has been considered an epidemic — but the rate of infection and the deadliness of that seasonal virus has varied.

From 2010 to 2019, the seasonal flu infected between 9.3 million and 41 million each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between 12,000 and 52,000 people died each year in that time period.

The flu killed from 0.05 percent and 0.17 percent of infected people a year, according to the CDC. By comparison, COVID’s mortality rate in the United States has been about 1.6 percent of people infected, according to Johns Hopkins University. The CDC has attributed more than 731,000 deaths to COVID-19 over 20 months. Between 2010 and 2019, about 342,000 deaths were attributed to flu.

But with COVID vaccines, the game changes, said Ross McKinney, the chief scientific officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges. Among vaccinated people, COVID’s mortality rate became about equal to flu, McKinney said.

That reduction to the threat of the virus could go a long way to making it seem more normal, he said.

“I think we’re going to be to where it’s like flu fairly soon,” McKinney said. “For vaccinated people, the impact is very much like flu. When we have a very large percentage of people vaccinated, which we hope eventually we do, it will feel like a flu epidemic. It will feel familiar.”...

hope ur still uttering this garbage when you break your leg and need hospital care and cant get it because everywhere filled to the brim with covid patients

This has not, is not and will not happen.
We have a parallel healthcare system.

If you don't understand the word parallel you can google it.

What do you think is going to happen if the facilities dedicated to covid are filled? Do you think the "regular" hospitals are going to deny covid patients? No, they will be forced to accept them, thus leading to the situation that i described. "parallel healthcare system" is nothing but a meaningless name in the face of outbreaks akin to those seen in states with low vaccination rates. you anti vax idiots are just incapable of understanding this because you've been largely shielded from the grim realities that other territories had to face. TT got lucky, but now I guess we'll wait and see if that luck holds out

Wow wow wow ... I'm not anti vax ... I have all my childhood vaccines plus I took a J&J.

I'm just anti-Moron and you seem to fall into that category.

We didn't get lucky we got hit as hard as we could get hit ... An were still freaking here.

So preach the Doom and Gloom brother ... the rest of us will be living it up.

You've been posting anti-vax and covid-denying bs for months, and constantly shifting goalposts whenever your arguments get dismantled, much like hover11. So you're either a better troll than him, or you're easily amongst the least intelligent people on this board.

We've had SoE and lockdowns for months when things were escalating, before Delta, and you saying we got hit as hard as we could get hit? are you so dense and ignorant that you don't even pay attention to what has happened in territories that have superior healthcare than us, with similar vaccination rates and similar levels of restrictions as we do right now? It's not rocket science.

Even though the global scientific conversation is no longer about herd immunity, but rather personal protection, it's simply ignorant to not acknowledge that our healthcare infrastructure will be in considerable danger in the coming weeks and months.

An Overwhelmed Healthcare System

Early in the pandemic, the government created a parallel healthcare system, designating certain medical facilities to treat COVID-19 patients. However, the government did not fully enforce border closure, leading to a Venezuelan immigrant introducing the P1 Brazilian variant into the country.

Cases surged, with hospitals reaching over 95% occupation. The government’s inability to offer a steady supply of PPE, overtime or childcare pushed healthcare workers, who the pandemic had already spread thin, out of the profession. Despite the one nurse to 30 patient ratio, the Joint Trade Union Movement revealed that medical facilities were still only hiring healthcare workers temporarily.

Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards, Principal Medical Officer, announced that hospitals were filling faster than emptying and they are “basically out of hospital beds.” This resulted in only 10 patients being admitted to the hospital per 100 cases. Meanwhile, those who were not able to afford private healthcare had to treat themselves at home. The U.S. government donated two field hospitals to mitigate COVID-19’s impact on Trinidad and Tobago, each with a 40-bed capacity.

Sando used to be 130% occupation on a regular day before covid.

And now they established separate system to not affect the regular system.

The ur 8 icu spaces close to filled for a population of 1.5m.

600000 population if you meant Sando alone for 8 icu beds

Sando has people lining the corridors for days waiting for bed, some times only to stay for a few hours to get discharged.

That's total hospital beds. Not free government beds.

When will life return to normal?

While the best vaccines are highly effective at preventing hospitalization and death, it takes a coordinated campaign to stop a pandemic. Infectious-disease experts say that vaccinating 70% to 85% of the U.S. population would enable a return to normalcy.

On a global scale, that’s a daunting level of vaccination. At the current pace of 27.5 million a day, the goal of high levels of global immunity remains a long way off. Manufacturing capacity, however, is steadily increasing, and new vaccines by additional manufacturers are coming to market.

The Path to Immunity Around the World

In Trinidad and Tobago, the latest vaccination rate is 4,043 doses per day, on average. At this pace, it will take another 7 months to cover 75% of the population.

They need to make it mandatory that unvaccinated people will not be treated if they contracted covid 19. It's time to put up or shut up!
