$25K prize for the first 7 second run on May 1st

A new Championship Drag Racing Series in T&T will kick off next weekend on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1st May 2016 at the Wallerfield International Raceway, Cumuto from 10 a.m. The main sponsor for the series is the distributor for Llumar Window Films, Rishi Kanick, himself a drag racer with a personal fastest time of 5.26 seconds running at 274 km/hr in a Top Alcohol Dragster in North Carolina some years ago.

At the official media launch of the series at the Rio Claro room at HYATT on April 22, Kanick said, “With a championship, drivers and crews can look forward to a controlled, coordinated series with professional competitive spirit for this year. It should motivate some positive energy back into the sport especially with the $25,000 Jackpot to the first racer running a seven seconds pass. This jackpot has never been offered before at a drag racing event and will be good news to all and sundry up for the challenge.” Kanick noted that this series is the first of its kind to specifically treat the racers with cash prizes for popular race brackets on the weekend. At least $5,000 will be up for grabs for all registered classes e.g. fastest V8, six cylinder, 4 cylinder, Rotary, Bike, Exotic car shootout and a top prize of $10,000 for 4WD shootout.

Members of Trinidad & Tobago Automobile Sport Association (TTASA) will ensure Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) regulations are maintained for a safe and secure competition. All race teams are encouraged to pre-register for the event and the public are invited to call 682-3468, 389-6712 for more information.

Good Day,

As stated, "Full race cars will get a service vehicle pass". Can the association give some further clarifications as to what is considered a race car or not.

Regards

Event promoter Rishi Kanick said "Drags still on and Racing should start by 1:00PM with just some minor changes in parking system. Bring yuh cooler and come while we wait to see a 7 seconds pass hopefully today !!!
Just remember the track compound and team can get the track ready in less than an hour. So please forward this to everyone."

This had to be the worse drag racing event I have ever attended from a competitor/crew point of view, first off we were located too far away from the starting grid not allowing us to see or hear any activity or support the driver. It appeared to me "the poor man" was stuffed in a hole and forgotten since the promoter big shot friends were allowed to park and fix their cars on the very same circuit track TTASA wanted to avoid oil, glycol contaminating. Being there as a crew member with my girlfriend was hard, three toilets came Saturday at 5pm which made it stressful since we had to walk 1/2 mile to use another, being there from 11am and only getting 3 runs total because of the incompetence of the grid marshals with a less than 1/4 turn out was totally disgusting and this was on Saturday, Sunday was worse. No prize money/trophy was given out after the incompletion of the promised agenda.

Pros of this past drag event (my opinion):
* spectator stands upgraded
* nice flow of races
* Track seemed to be prepped very well
* announcer seems to have done a good job informing patrons of vehicles/times/announcements etc
* good emergency vehicle turnout

Cons:
* ridiculous system at the ticket booth . Had this event attracted the anticipated crowd there would have been additional chaos at that ticket booth
* Parking. I think every drag racing promoter should just bite the bullet and allow structured parking along the left side of the track. Van men would be grateful, no overcrowding of the stands as men would prefer to sit in their trays to watch the action, better vantage point etc
* Timing system. In an event advertised to give financial prizes based on performance in certain brackets what happens when a vehicle makes a run and the time is not recorded for whatever reason?

Other than the above the event attracted some very nice vehicles and not too bad a turnout considering the weather earlier in the day.
