gary007 - get an affidavit stating you are the owner. This together with your other documents (receipts etc) should be submitted to the Transport Commissioner. The transfer will then be done was he's satisfied you are indeed the owner (tried and tested method)

lana - checking the certified copy will determine the car's exact age (based on date of registration). If that date already passed, then the car is 10 years old and the transfer fee will be $150... if not yet 10, the fee will be $1350. If the latter is true, you can try to work something out with the owner to postpone the sale/transfer until the 10 year anniversary so the lower fee will be payable. As for what you actually have to pay on the day, it is only the transfer fee... in part, whole, or none at all, depending on the terms of the sale, and how the fee will the paid/split by the old/new owners.

thelem - you can do a title search. I believe Credit Chex does this... not sure what their fee is though. However, I'd be wary of that situation. If the car is owned by the 'child mother', what is that gentleman doing with the car, and what authority does he have to sell it? I suggest you try to speak with the registered owner about her permission regarding the sale, and deal with her thereafter since she is the one who will have to transfer it to you

ROTARY BRAIN - refer to my first comment to gary007. This method works from the seller's point of view too. A more complicated method would be to write the current owner threatening legal action. If still no cooperation, you can deem the sale invalid due to default by the buyer to complete the transaction, and report the car stolen. Of course you'd have to refund the buyer his money when everything is said and done.

rotaryking - the whole idea behind 'rights' is borderline, or outright illegal. Vehicles with a separate chassis are more suitable since the local chassis holding the rights, can be swapped into a foreign bodyshell. Cars with a monocoque chassis though (most definitely the case with your situation since the rights donor is only 9 years old) cannot be legally registered with the rights of another car, despite being the same make/model.

I bought my car in April 2010. I did not receive the Certified Copy (transfer) until the last week of November 2010 from the Sando office. Good thing I pestered the staff down there, as everytime I go,a different Rooster and bull story was applied to me.

I bought my local used roll on roll off PBR series car in January 2010. The year of manufacture is Sept 2000 and the year of first registration was 2004. They calculated my vehicle to be over 5 years old (2004 - 2010) and my tax was $3000.00. (5-7 yrs old)

So the year of manufacture has absolutely nothing to do with the transfer tax, they only look at the date the first owner registered the vehicle in trinidad and calculate it based on that.

Also, i paid to get the certified copy with my name on it, and two weeks later, all i got back was a photocopy of the same old one from before. And i was told to see the clerk so he can write it in for me. Waited until mr. clerk decided he going for lunch and leaving for the day. Went back another day and clerk did not come out.

Licensing office is the worse.
Paid so much money, sent so much time, and still the car not in my name. :evil:

Anybody knows what form of payment the Licensing Office will accept for vehicle transfer fees? I'm sure they will take cash but will they do Linx or bank draft?? And if they accept bank draft who should it be made out to? Tried calling the number licensing office but big surprise....no answer after about 10 mins of constant ringing.

I don't believe this infor. has been posted as yet,so here goes;
I just got back home after seeking to transfer a PCP vehicle which was first registered in May 2010 and myself and buyer were advised that all roll-on roll-off units which have been registered over the last 2 years are subject to an off site exercise and the period needed to clear the transfer is up to 2 weeks.
Until the paper work comes back the licensing authority will accept no payment for transfer and therfore no receipt can be provided to facilitate closure of bank financing during this period.
We visited with the officer in charge and he confirmed the situation and although he was sympathetic he indicated that the present situation was somewhat out of the licensing authorities hands and there was very little he could do.He also recognised that 'competent authorities' may not have published anything to inform the public.
All sellers and buyer be so advised.

Many thanks - this is the clearest and most direct explanation I have seen anywhere. The official websites should learn from you.

Is the procedure the same for transfer of a company vehicle to a private individual. Is there any special conditions to note?
