Youth stabbed at PNM rally
Tuesday, May 18 2010
A youth rally by the People’s National Movement (PNM) at Guaracara Park which began at noon Sunday and was due to end at midnight, was cut short at about 9 pm when a young man was stabbed several times to the chest by another man. There were reports of other fights, and bottle throwing incidents.
An eyewitness told Newsday, while music was being played, an argument broke out between two men and a fight ensued.
Following the argument it is reported that one of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed the other. “Just like that, this man pulled out a knife and stabbed the other man. His t-shirt was soaked in blood. Everyone began scampering to exit the park and they had to stop the rally,” the eyewitness said.
The eyewitness added that police officers on duty ran towards the fight and intervened. “When the man saw the police officers he began to run. They later held and handcuffed him. he again started running this time with the handcuffs on and the police again ran after him,” the eye witness explained.
He further said that while the handcuffed suspect was running he was tripped by another man in the crowd, and another fight started.
“The police got hold of the young man. Meantime, a group of men jumped on the man who tripped the handcuffed man, and started beating him. Police had to break up that fight,” the eyewitness said. The victim was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) by ambulance.
The suspect remains in custody. PNM candidate for Pointe-a-Pierre constituency Christine Kangaloo, was reportedly present at the rally. Before the incident she was seen greeting young supporters.
Prior to these incidents, there were performances by Adesh Samaroo, Blaxx Prophet Benjamin and others.
Marabella police officers confirmed the stabbing incident. Officials at the PNM Pointe-a-Pierre constituency office, could not shed any light on the event.
