try some cetane booster or such, i heard from more than one person that that engine is noisy due to the diesel.

What brand and grade are you all using? Especially the oils that quiet this engine down.

Oils are a pretty touchy subject as there is no clear right or wrong oil to use. Having said that, I can offer suggestions based on actual user feedback from actual L200 owners.

Note that the recommendations you saw to 5W30 up to 15W40 may be a little misleading, you should really look to you owners manual for the correct viscosity. I may be subject to correction but I believe these engine are to use 15W40 according to the manual (in that case you may get away with 5W40, but not 5W30)

The general feedback seems to suggest that fully synthetic oils work best (i.e. quieter operations, less burnoff, longer change intervals). As I mentioned before, you may get away with 5W40 up to 15W40 due to the fact that both grades will operate the same at operating temperature.

Some of the popular brands being used without issue are Valvoline, Amsoil, Amsoil Signature Series and NP.

You can use this info to select an oil best suited to you

Much thanks! Ended up using the Amsoil. Do you know of any good mechanics up north for servicing of these vehicles and general maintenance?

Sorry, not aware of any in the north area. Most of the owners, after finishing the servicing with Diamond, go to Dr. B's in Marabella (305-9900)

Good evening all, I'm from Tobago. I recently bought a 2007 L200 Sportero (KB4); so far it's operating as it should and I haven't much major issues other than the usual wear and tear (previous owner was into yachts, so there's a fabricated tow-hitch he used that came with the van). I've got to change the front shocks and brakes, as well as the glow plugs as sometimes it takes about 10 seconds to turn over from a cold start. I have a few questions:

1. Is there anywhere that can be recommended in Trinidad to purchase brakes and what brand should I get? Tobago as usual has bupkiss.

2. Apart from the front shocks, is there anything else that I should look at changing? I know the shocks for sure are shot as I get excessive vibration from the steering and the van, the handling is a lot poorer, etc. These weren't happening when I just got it. So I just wanted to know what else I should possibly look at changing.

3. The left fog lamp isn't working, but I'd like to replace them both; the left has some sort of brown discoloration in it. Looks like maybe at some point water got in and stayed in. It worked a few times when I just started driving it, but stopped after about two weeks. Could anyone say where I can get them from locally? If not I'll source them online, but I'd like to try locally first especially if the price is reasonable.

Looking forward to any advice and looking forward to making this vehicle into my very own. Thanks much in advance.

Welcome to the club buddy.

so to answer your questions as best as I could from my experiences:

1. Use OEM pads and shoes if you can, which can be bought from Diamond, Marud, Faiz, Specialist Auto and thru the local L200 Owner's Club. If you cannot, I would suggest doing as I do, and use OEM shoes at least in the rear and Bosch pads up front. Bosch is the best option in terms of costs, durability, dust and noise.

2. I would suggest going to a decent alignment shop and having it checked, as it would be hard to recommend without an inspection. However if you're a bit on the DIY side, , I'd say have a look at the rack as that's known to wear away and cause a 'knock'. Check the upper ball joints, upper cradle bushings, rack ends, steering ends, stabilizer links and wheel bearings (these aren't failures common to the L200 but can result from usual wear and tear).

If you get the chance to come across to Trinidad, I would suggest Roops in Gasparillo for a complete suspension check-up.

3. Bobby's or Dollar Savers in the Bamboo has them for approximately $600.00/pair

Also, feel fee to PM me your contact if you wish to be a part of the local Owner's Club chats for further access to information.

I hope this helps and that you enjoy your L200 ownership experience.

Good afternoon, thanks much for replying.

I did take it to my mechanic here in Tobago (he's probably one of the best I've found) and he discovered that the steering rack was leaking and the rubber that goes around or over the rack (can't remember.. Still kinda getting up to speed with all this) was totally worn out. Since he doesn't do rack rebuilds I ended up contacting the guy I bought it from and he had his mechanic do the rebuild (seal replacement, etc.); so I sent the van down last week Wednesday and got it back Friday. The rubber wasn't changed so still getting the knocking feeling.

On Monday this week, while driving, the steering started feeling weird and while navigating a turn, the van began to swerve uncontrollably from side to side, causing me to almost crash. But I didn't panic and just calmly took my time to bring the van to a stop before continuing. Since then the steering has not been operating as it normally would; it feels heavy and there's a delay when turning. So it's back at the mechanic on my side who suspects that something may not have been tightened or secured correctly.

The brakes got changed in Trinidad as I told the previous owner about it, but the brand I saw them use was something called Intima. So I know they will have to be changed soon as they're squealing from time to time and those things were too darn cheap.

The front shocks are bad and need to be replaced. The rear ones were replaced while it was in Trinidad (tokico).

Been getting cold starts, so I bought some new glow plugs and I also asked my mechanic to check the fuel pump and make sure that there's no air in it; I did some reading/watching and saw that could also be a factor, but I believe the glow plugs may be the root as I'm getting white smoke when it finally does turn over.

All in all, a bit bummed that I have more issues to deal with, but I'll get them sorted as I really like the vehicle and believe that it was worth the buy. I'll pm you for the add.

Thanks again.

Good day,

I understand being bummed about the work that needs to be done. It's easy to forget that the vehicle is as old as it is ('07 will be 14yrs old this year) and there will be maintenance that needs to be done.

Please PM me (I sent you a message via WhatsApp) the name of the mechanic that did the work on your rack, I want to ensure that it isn't one of the club endorsed mechanics, and if so, direct you to the ideal person for the job. Wrt the uncontrolled behaviour, that is indeed strange. Maybe have a look at the strainer in the reservoir, or maybe there's air in the system.

There is a very good L200 mechanic from Trinidad who often frequents Tobago so I will advise you via WhatsApp.

4M41 is just the best engine in these
even the newer high-spec 4D56 that I have driven brand new just don't respond like these, 4M41 low end torque from idle makes for city and non-highway driving a real pleasure

I might jump back in sometime in the future, cuz van is life, but I'm interested in other things right now and as much fun as it's been for the past 10+ years, it's time for a change

the new pretty models are

Good day everyone, new owner here. Just bought me a 08 3.2 litre. Also new to the diesel world. Van works really nice so far no noises squeaks or anything. I would like to have a good mechanic check out everything on the vehicle and also looking to change all the fluids. Can anyone recommend anyone?
