Re: L200 owners........what are your experiences???

I have a L200 sportero 2008 4wd manual transmission. I have owned the vehicle for about 2 years and one day the 3rd and 4th gear sychronizer hub stripped out and I wasn't getting 3rd and 4th gear. I ordered the part from Diamond motors and replaced it, it lasted three weeks and stripped again. My mechanic is at a lost and so am I. Thousands have been spent. The gearbox functioned perfectly up to that point when it failed. The quest for a solution continues...

My elderly uncle drives a L200. One day he carried it for an engine wash in preparation for inspection a few days away and while driving home he started hearing a ticking sound. He proceeded to carry the van by an electrician who he never had previous dealings with and they told him it's the heater system for his glow plugs. They proceeded to install a bypass switch which he must hold down for some seconds before fore starting. He now hates this system. Can this heating system be replaced? How easy is it to acquire?
Thanks

IIRC, some L200 use a separate controller and relay to power the glow plugs. Both can be replaced and fairly simply.

But if the clicking sound was from the glow plug relay, the control circuit could have been grounded or the relay could have been flooded by the power washing.

If the manual switch is functioning the relay, then the issue is likely the controller.

I would take off the control unit and relay, check them both for internal moisture or contact corrosion, check the control wires for continuity, and clean all connections with spray on cleaner.

Another problem he has is on mornings, or when the vehicle completely cold, he starts the van but has to run out and pump the primer until the vehicle idles properly else the vehicle cuts off.. Did clean the fuel tank, change primer, new filters, different brands of filters, same problem. Went from mechanic to mechanic and no one can solve his problem. Once the van has been warmed up it runs good.

What are your thoughts?
