Did you ever see the MythBusters episode where they poured in used cooking oil into a diesel engine and it ran at approx 90% of normal diesel?

I for one wouldn't mind trying it. I read somewhere that the new common rails don't work well with the bio fuels. Anybody have more info?

Agreed New oil cost to much but if you could get a company like Japs of KFC to give you there used oil then it would be FREE.

so one litre of used cooking oil - $0.00 just need to buy coffee filters
One litre of diesel - $1.50

removal, haulage, storage, filtration, treatment, distribution & TIME = cost.

What do I mean?

Removal:
So you go to Japs and ask: "Hey, can I get your used oil?". Mr. Jap who has a special truck to collect used oil, cause you cannot pour it down the drain, will have to have a new agreement with you to collect the used oil.
And you have to continue to remove the used oil on a constant basis.

Haulage:
You have to pay said truck man to deliver old oil to your storage facility, which , must conform to some environmental / industrial standards. You alsso need a license to bunker / bond right?

Storage:
Specially designed tanks to receive the product. BTW, used cooking oil smells like, well... crap. So your facilities must take this into consideration.

Filtration and treatment:
Coffee filter you say? You are dealing with impurities, soot, chemicals and other factors in your used oil. What about adding fuel conditioners to treat your fuel system. Kerosene and Dieselene are essentially the same. Fuel for vehicles MUST have additives to protect the fuel system, enhance flow rates of the fuels, etc.

Distribution:
Gonna have to get a hand pump or whatever to get the scrubbed cooking oil to your vehicle.

Time:
How long does it take to do all of the above? How long does it take to drive into a service station?

Even on a small scale, you have all of these factors involved, so dont ever say that there is NO cost.

^^ OK OK point taken.
Maybe not at the present time then. But if the PNM government gets back into power they have said that they will be reducing there subsides on Gas and Diesel therfore this might be more feasible in the future.

There was an article month or so ago in the dailies....The owner of Mystic Hemp has converted a new Musso pickup and the kits are available locally Think it was 15,000. Check mystic hemp....sorrry cant recall the details.......oh yes this was straight used vegetable oil no conversion of the oil to biodiesel.

^^ yes saw that article but $15,000 is way to much to do when any diesel engine with some purification can run the same oil.
I think he was also collecting the oil and selling it (not sure about that). Which means it will take me years to even break even with that.
This also makes NO cents at this time.
